Nanny Schools: The New Professional Career Path

Jane Meyer
Becoming a nanny used to be a career path that required no prior experience. One only needed an interest in children and a gentle demeanor. Nowadays, professional training is available to young women who wish to become nannies. When schools teaching a certain trade become popular, it's a sure sign that the profession has stepped up a level in caliber and demand and that the cream of the crop will have certificates from these types of institutions.

According to the blog Urban Baby, Manhattan nannies can earn up to $19 per hour. Hollywood nannies of celebrities' children often live in luxurious households that also employ maids and cooks. To be considered a top candidate for these types of nanny jobs, it looks good to have proper schooling in the intricacies of childcare and household management.

Nanny training school programs last anywhere from seven days to four months. Nanny schools can be found in all parts of the country. Female high school graduates who are not ready for college but needs to become employed following graduation would be perfect candidates for a nanny program.

Also perfect for the program are young women who adore babies and children but who are not ready to get married and become mothers. Young women who want to live in another part of the country but can't afford to move on their own can become live-in nannies to families in that particular locale.

Entering the career of nanny/caregiver to children involves much more than just taking care of the kids in your charge. If you are employed by a family who is middle class, they most likely will not also employ a cook and a housekeeper. If both parents work, a reliable nanny may be expected to prepare light meals for the family, tidy up around the house and wash the kids' laundry.

Besides courses in childcare, behavior techniques and CPR, many of these nanny schools also teach classes in household budgeting, cooking and communication techniques in dealing with the parents. A nanny who attends a nanny school will have the tools and communication skills necessary in dealing with the modern family's hectic lives and stressed out parents who both work.

Nanny schools are a fairly new concept that is gaining popularity. The role of nanny has become much more high profile and important in the family dynamic.
