Either way it goes, you just do not have an explanation for this type of behavior. Why does this happen? That is a good question. There are many possible reasons for it. You will gain insight on why college students fall asleep in class.
They are deprived of sleep. It is unlikely they get much sleep at night, especially if they work during the day after class and have to study at night.
Their teacher is boring. I had a psychology professor in college who talked in a slow, monotonous tone. During one of his class sessions, a large portion of the class fell asleep. After class was over, a fellow student said, "God, he's boring."
The class is held in a big room, making it easier for students to do this, especially if they are away from the front part of the room. The psychology class I just told you about was held in an auditorium-type room that could hold about five hundred people.
The teachers either do not catch it or they just do not care. Believe me, if they see you do it and they are bothered by it, they will let you know their displeasure.
The students who do it are not interested enough. If you care enough to learn, you will fight to stay awake. Please keep in mind this is easier said than done.
They were not taught any better. They did not learn that it is rude to fall asleep when others are talking to you. Someone should ask them, "Didn't your parents teach you better than this?"
They cannot help it. Sometimes you can just accidentally nod off, no matter how interested you are, no matter how much sleep you have had. Heck, it has even happened to me. Once when I did it in a Spanish class, the teacher got on my behind after class. Let me tell you something - I never did it again.
They see some of their fellow students do it; therefore, they follow suit. We sometimes do something if others do it - this does not really justify it.
You have learned reasons why some college students fall asleep in class.
