Reasons to Eat Breakfast Each Day

Sophie
I have sat on both sides of the fence when it comes to eating breakfast. As a teenager I would not eat breakfast because I found it hard to do so. I felt sick if I ate too early in the morning, so I just decided it was best to avoid it altogether rather than feel ill each time I tried to eat. I would just grab a cup of tea in the morning before I left for school and that was supposed to tide me over until lunchtime. The only trouble is, it did not tide me over at all! By about 10:00am I was really hungry! Somehow I was able to overcome the hunger and get on with my lessons, but it wasn't easy.

Now I am a little older, I make sure I eat breakfast each day, even if it is just a bowl of fruit salad and a glass of water. In the latter half of my teens, I decided to train my body to accept breakfast in the morning. So I started small. It did not come easy in the beginning though. I would still feel a little sick when I tried to eat, but I knew that if I didn't eat anything I would be ravenous by lunchtime. So I began by eating some toast with my cup of tea. That worked well and I could soon feel my metabolism kicking in. My body then began to gradually crave breakfast each morning. So I increased the amount I ate in the mornings by adding cereal to my breakfast menu. I began to feel much better while I was at school and I did not always get pangs of hunger during my mid morning lessons. I felt more energetic, my concentration was better and I was not looking forward to lunchtime in the same way as before!

People skip breakfast for a variety of reasons. Some feel that eating breakfast is not conducive to a successful weight loss regime. But this could not be further from the truth. Just because you are cutting out the calories in the morning, it does not mean you will lose weight. In fact, the opposite tends to happen. The body's metabolism needs fuel to function properly, and skipping breakfast does not provide the fuel the body needs. That means that when the next meal or snack comes along, you are more likely to consume more calories to make up for your hunger. When the body is hungry it will usually crave sweet food and other unhealthy meal alternatives because it needs an instant rush of energy. So if you are trying to lose weight, include breakfast in your meal plan and make sure it is a nutritious meal that will sustain you. Whenever I visit France I can't wait to try the breakfasts. The French are adept at creating beautiful, nourishing breakfasts. They usually serve cold cuts of meat, cheese, eggs, cereal, fruit and a selection of bread. I am not saying you should eat a banquet each morning. But choose from a variety of breakfast food items. Perhaps you can have a bowl of oatmeal, with a chopped banana on top, along with one slice of toast and a drink. Or how about a bowl of cereal, freshly squeezed orange juice and a pear?

Eating breakfast really does help the body in so many different ways. Not only does it improve the body's metabolism and help a person maintain an ideal body weight, but it also helps a person concentrate better in school, work or some other capacity. If you are in a rush each morning and just cannot fit in the time to eat, you can still benefit from breakfast by taking some food along with you. A piece of fruit and some crackers spread with peanut butter or cream cheese will kick start your metabolism. When I was in school I would see other children would eat chocolate for breakfast! Some food is better than nothing, but I would not recommend eating chocolate for breakfast or any other item that will provide an instant sugar rush, such as a donut or muffin. The energy that is provided will not last long and the person will soon find themselves hungry again. So make a wise food choice first thing in the morning and your body will thank you for it later on.
