Apples are slow food: They are chalk full of fiber (5 grams). To eat one requires a relationship with said apple. No, you cannot simply gulp and dash. You must chew the apple in order to enjoy it. Since chewing takes time, your body can register that is it full, without the need to fill up on empty calories. No need to order those super sized French fries. They contain natural sweeteners, which enter the bloodstream gradually; therefore, your blood sugar and insulin levels remain constant and steady. This allows us to feel full longer. In this case, apples prove slow and steady can win the race.

Apples are smart food. They boost the production of acetylcholine, a chemical that transmits messages between nerve cells. Because of this, apples are thought to enhance memory and keep your brain sharp. A recent animal study conducted at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, suggests that eating an apple a day can lessen the odds of being stricken with Alzheimer's disease. No wonder they are so strongly associated with school teachers. Teachers really are smart!
