1. If a girl wants to play pee wee football, she's probably got some skills. A lot of boys join football because their dads want them to play, or their friends are playing. They don't always play football because they have a burning passion to play. Girls expect to get some resistance to the idea. If they are willing to put up with that resistance, they probably believe that they can prove themselves worthy of being there.
2. Boys will respect her. Although we anticipated that the boys would be the ones putting up the stink about a girl on the team, it wasn't long before they began to notice her skills. When a girl can show the boys that she's not afraid to be on the field with them, she'll get respect.
3. Girls won't mess with her. Although my daughter isn't really a tomboy at all, girls know that she's a football player and they really don't want to get her mad. Not only do they assume that she can take care of herself, they are pretty sure that a bunch of boys would come to her rescue if needed.
4. It's less dangerous than some 'girly' sports. When we went to the doctors to get the sports physical, the doctor said, "Well, it's nice to see you move to a less dangerous sport." My daughter was a gymnast and a cheerleader before becoming a football player. Both of those sports have more injuries that football.
5. It'll make her smarter. To quote a famous pee wee football movie. Little Giants; "Football is 80% mental and 40% physical". Girls do well in football because they have the ability to think strategically and multi-task. They can take in what's happening on the field and make quick decisions about what they need to do in some ways better than boys.
So, if your ten year old daughter says she wants to play pee wee football, take a deep breath, a sip of wine and get ready for a fun time.

Post a CommentYou go girl. Be happy and confident being who you are and you will always get respect.
hey okay i just started playing last year, i had the opption to play volleyball but i chose football instead your story pretty much explains me, my guy friends are always there to back me up if i need anything, and will always help me out in stuff, and i love it im starting wide receiver, linebacker, and im on the kick off team, i find football a challenge but its very fun! im a very girly girl and all the boys couldnt believe that i was playing they always teased me omg i broke a nail, until one game i broke this kids leg from alpena michigan, and now they respect the fact that im good at what i do, i was the same way i was a cheeleader and a gymnast before this all happenned but now my friends say that i can be all primped and pretty then go hit the fields for some football!
Good advice. I'll keep that in mind if my daughter ever wants to do a "boy sport." Never thought of football from that point of view.
