People who are engaged in desk jobs and those who use their fingers and hands excessively generally acquire a condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome. This is very common in software professionals, data entry processors, writers etc. This is mainly caused due to compression of the median nerve. The median nerve passes through a tunnel that is formed by the carpal bones. A number of ligaments and tendons pass through this channel connecting the hand and the wrist. When there is increased pressure in this channel it will lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. The most common symptoms are pain, numbness and burning sensation. Arm numbness during pregnancy is also an indicator of carpal tunnel syndrome.
During pregnancy, there may be a lot of swelling due to fluid retention in the body. This will put increased pressure on the carpal tunnel, which may in turn cause a median nerve compression. The nerve compression will lead to symptoms that may indicate carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy.
The median nerve provides sensation in the index, middle, thumb, and half of the ring finger. If there is a compression of the nerve it can have an adverse effect on the sensation of the fingers. This may lead to tingling, burning, or numbness in the fingers as well as the wrist. Other than the arm numbness during pregnancy, you may also experience an ache or weakness in your arms.
Arm numbness during pregnancyis more pronounced during the second trimester of pregnancy. This is a problem that will usually resolve on its own. However, you may try some simple exercises to relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. If you are in a desk job, you could position your hand at an elevated level while you work. It is important to use a keyboard that is ergonomically designed. You may try to flex or wriggle your fingers several times during the day in order to release the pressure.
In case you experience arm numbness during pregnancy, you may also try wearing splints or wrist braces. This will help in maximizing space in the carpal tunnel and it will help in reducing the numbness and tingling sensation as well.
