Reasons to Quit Smoking

People quit smoking for different reasons. Some do not want to have health problems when they are elderly, others want more energy to participate more activities with friends and family, and others want to stop the aging process. While this is impossible, when a person quits smoking, they are helping their skin begin to repair itself and reverse the effects of smoking. Over time, a person's skin will appear younger and clearer.

Many people have trouble quitting, however. This trouble has spawned many products that claim to help even the biggest smokers quit. Nicotine substitutes in the form of patches, gum, and injections were created to ease a person's craving for nicotine by releasing small doses into the body for a certain amount of time. This enables the body to learn to survive without nicotine. For those who are physically addicted to smoking, these treatments seem to work. But for those who are psychologically addicted, it may take more than reduced exposure to nicotine to get them to quit for good.

For some, smoking is a form of relaxation. Quitting would take away that private space they have created for themselves in order to block out all their troubles. Hypnosis, substitution behavior therapies, and other forms of therapy have been used to help these people quit smoking. People have had success with these therapies. They have found other ways to relax that are not as destructive to their bodies.

Some people quit smoking for awhile and then start again. Life can be very difficult sometimes and people need ways to release energy or to numb their bodies temporarily. This is why people smoke. Quitting is not easy for people who have an attachment to the habit of smoking. There are support programs that can help. A person should have a family member or friend that they can talk to whenever they feel like smoking.

Breaking the smoking habit takes time, patience, and energy. Finding other ways to reduce stress include exercising, finding new hobbies, meeting new people, or changing other bad habits will help a person along the way. Being around others who smoke may not be the best idea. A person will have to find new friends or see them in environments where they cannot smoke. Many states have no smoking laws in restaurants and public buildings. Not being able to smoke will also help a person kick their habit and live a longer life.
