You will always want some type of lid on your fish tank. Even though they are expensive, there's a reason that they make them. I will provide you with all of the reasons that you need a lid on your freshwater or saltwater fish tank.
The first reason is that lids on the aquarium will keep out dust. You do not want different particules falling into your fish tank. You want to keep the water as clear as possible free from debis. Another reason is that most of us use air freshners. When you spray these into the air, they do not disperse into the air like you think that they do. What you spray into the air will fall into the fish tank. You will want to keep as much debris out of your tank as possible.
Another reason that you want to place some type of lid on the aquarium is to keep the fish in the aquarium. A lof of fish love to jump and they will try to jump out of your fish tank if you give them the chance. You don't want to find any fish behind your tank or on the floor. I've had plenty of fish jump out of the tank even with some type of lid on the aquarium. Without a lid, all of your fish will probably end up on the floor at some point.
If you have children you will really want a lid on the fish tank. You want to keep them from swimming in the fish tank and throwing items into the fish tank. If you have a child they will try to throw items into the fish tank. If you have a lid you wont have any problems. If you do not have a lid you will end up with a lot of items inside of your aquarium such as food. Your water will get cloudy and dirty fast with a bunch of different types of food floating in your fish tank.
Another reason you will want a lid is if you have a cat. Imagine you are sleeping at night and you cant jumps into your 75 gallon tank that doesn't have a lid. If you don't hear the cat screaming you will not know the cat is in the fish tank. Imagine what would happen when you come out in the morning. You better pray that you cat knows how to get out of the fish tank.
