Reasons Why an eBay Seller's Items Don't Sell

Michelle Rogers
eBay is the number one online auction site, with millions of users all over the world. Millions of people join eBay with the intent of selling their old belongings and anything they can find in hopes of making an easy buck. Well, the fact of the matter is there is no easy buck. With so many people flooding the markets, many slashing their prices to undersell their competitors, it becomes very challenging for anyone to sell anything no matter what it is or how much it is worth. Competition is one major reason, but it is not the only one.

The rising gas prices have drastically cut into people's budgets, having an impact on how much people are willing to spend, as a good portion of their budget is getting sucked into their gas tank. Not only are consumers affected at the pumps, they are also hit hard by the prices for food and other necessities. People naturally begin finding ways they can cut back; this could mean they are willing to pay for shipping rather than gas, or it may mean they may refrain from making unnecessary purchases.

Other things can also influence purchases such as a new baby, a new job, or a new house. The personal lives of shoppers can have a major impact on what they need, what they want, and what they can afford. A rich cosmetic surgeon with time to kill and money to burn is going to have different needs and wants compared to a mother of four working two jobs to support her kids. Sellers who identify their target customers and direct their ads towards their needs are going to have a better chance at selling their products.

The season plays a major role in purchases involving sports, clothing, recreational equipment, and many other types of items. It is obvious a bikini for sale in the middle of winter is probably not going to sell; the same logic applies to all items. Usually people aren't going to buy something they won't use for several months unless they have the money to spend and don't mind storing the item until they can use it.

People are bombarded with so many listings, often times for the same or similar item so they rely on their judgment of the seller, as well as the pictures and description more than anything. If a seller posts a computer for sale, no one will buy it unless they can get an idea of what it looks like, what it includes, what condition it is in, etc. etc. That seller may start the bidding at 99 cents, but may not get any bids if the item is poorly described or the picture is of poor quality.

Whether you sell or not, eBay is making money left and right. They offer listing features to improve visibility and make your ads stand out; however, these tools are not free, nor are they guaranteed to help with sales. Insertion fees and final value fees can really add up and cut into any profit from the things you do sell. Shoppers who are truly looking for a certain item aren't always attracted to the listings with the extra features because they are not buying the ad but the item you're selling. The more detailed you are about the item, the better.

So in answer to the common, frustrating question asked by sellers-"Why isn't anyone buying my stuff?" All I can say is that there are 4 major things that come into play: tons of competition, external influences, the ad for your product, and the product itself.
