Reasons Why You Shouldn't Buy an IPhone...Yet

Henry Lamb
Apple Computers dropped the second word in their company name and are now just known as Apple Inc. Why? Because of the release of the much coveted iPhone, which turns out to be the new touch screen iPod that has had everybody on their toes since rumors of the device a couple of years back. However, looking at this new development, there are still major reasons why people should wait for later generations of Apple's iPhones.

Here is a listing of why you are better off with another brand of phone for the time being as Apple plays the "catch-up" game:

New OS, No choices.

The new iPhone runs on OSX 10. Sure, this is any Mac users dream. However, the problem right now is that there is not enough available software (third-party and commercial) to fully satisfy the techie dream. One would be much better off tinkering around with a Nokia phone which has had hundreds of software written for its Symbian platform.

0G?

With many phone brands moving up in the world in terms of service, its very shocking to see that the people at Apple didn't even bother making this beauty 3G capable. What is 3G? This type of phone technology allows for the transfer of voice data and other types of data possible. What is it good for? Applications like video conferencing, streaming and Internet access from virtually anywhere a 3G signal is picked up. One has to wonder why this was left out but it could appear in later versions of this phone. It would have been beautiful to make video calls on the iPhone that doesn't necessarily require you to hold the phone up to your face. For now, buy something off of Sony Ericsson or Nokia. Most of their newer models are 3G capable and probably much more when the iPhone is released in July 2007.

4 Gig or 8 Gig: For an iPod Video?

Apple mentioned that this was to be a revolutionary device because this happens to be the first generation of touch screen iPod Video platforms. But for a measly 4 to 8 gig, why would you want to buy this when there is an older (and very capable) iPod model that can hold up to between 30 to 60 gigs of video and music? Advice: wait for higher-capacity iPhones.

Size Does Matter.

Contrary to what you may think, this phone will not fit into your shirt pocket. With dimensions measuring 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches / 115 x 61 x 11.6mm, one will need to have a separate pouch for this "larger-than-your-palm" device. Much smaller model phones with better capabilities exist in today's market. Take, for example, the Nokia N95. It's much smaller than the iPhone and is much more powerful in that it has a built-in GPS.

Camera Conscious? Buy a Nokia.

One of the biggest reasons that people buy a phone is for its camera. Everybody wants to have some way to take a great picture with their camera. And with iPhone sporting a 2.0 mega pixel camera, this makes for a disappointing feature. Why? Currently, phone manufacturers are belting out cameras that have standard cameras of 3.2 mega pixels. Nokia just introduced the N95 that has a camera with 5.0 mega pixels. When the iPhone hits the US Market in July 2007, how old do you think the phone will feel?

Of course, for the fashion and trend conscious, this may be the best product to hit the market. But for the serious user, there is a huge range of phones to choose from provided by rival companies. One of the greatest expectations is that Apple upgrades their iPhones as soon as they release them in July. By now, they must realize that the market wants more. With companies like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola heading the mobile phone market, Apple will find that they will be tough acts to follow. Think before you buy something you will most probably end up trading for a Nokia.
