Rebels with a Cause: A Look at a Social Movement

Corey Sipe
On October 18, I went to the University Hour's presentation of the movie Rebels With A Cause which was about the hopes, rebellions, and repression of the 1960's as told by members of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). The film was produced and directed by Helen Garvy and a discussion followed the movie.

Rebels With A Cause was about the SDS, its efforts, and its impact on our country. The organization dealt with issues regarding race and gender discrimination, rights of students at universities, the draft, participatory democracy, and protesting of the Vietnam War. At its peak, SDS had over 100,000 members at 400 chapters in universities throughout the country. The effects of SDS are still felt today. SDS fought to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, fought to give students the right to evaluate professors at universities, and helped bring on the women's liberal movement which resulted in making the playing field more equal between males and females. Some of the slogans SDS used which summed up its philosophy include: we shall overcome, let the people decide, there's a change gonna come, and hell no nobody goes (referring to the protests of the Vietnam War).

Rebels With A Cause, in my opinion, could have been much better and should have been targeted towards today's college student rather than to those who lived during that time period. The movie lacked explanation of the Vietnam War, what it was about, why it lasted so long, and why it was the first war America lost. The movie was too much like a documentary and there was too much narration over pictures. The movie also was extremely biased and didn't tell the full picture of the decade. It failed to mention why some of the SDS members were on the FBI's Most Wanted List. It also failed to discuss government documents that have been released on the Vietnam War. It would have been beneficial if there were achieved TV network news footage of what was going on or at least narration of how the media responded both to SDS and the Vietnam War.
