Rebuttal to Jill Elaine Hughes's Obesity in America

The Real Problem with America

TAW
Welcome, Jill Elaine Hughes, to Associated Content and congratulations on your first published piece titled "Obesity in : The Awful Truth". Your article is already familiar with opposing views and criticism, although some people tend to agree. I, however, do not agree. Of course this is a friendly debate and I respect you as a writer.

I'll have to say you do make valid points but "'s problem" cannot be cured by curbing obesity alone. I'm wondering if you'd rather have a skinny thief versus a fat thief. Or maybe a skinny murderer versus a fat murderer. What is my point? My point is "' problem" cannot be pinpointed to a single problem such as obesity. Also, seems to have no problem with the "ability to compete in a global marketplace". Have you watched the news recently?

You state that "obesity is a serious medical condition". Let me ask you something. If 9 out of 10 car accidents are caused annually by brunette women, can we say that all brunette women cause car accidents? No, I don't think we can. That would be silly. In the same sense we cannot say that all fat or overweight people have health problems. Or that all fat and overweight people are the sole cause in a rise in medical costs. People who smoke, people who drink, people who are genetically ill, etc all contribute to rising medical costs.

"Bottom line, a fat is not acceptable". Yes. Because only skinny people know how to create world peace.

"This country absolutely must take real steps to curb the obesity epidemic - -up to and including heavily taxing junk food......" Those are not real solutions. They target and point out obese people as a group of food terrorists. Not all obese people are overweight from food. Some of the obese are overweight BECAUSE of medical conditions that prevent them from losing it.

While we all appreciate your attempts to create a better by criticizing and publicly expressing your judgmental opinions about obesity, poking a stick at our bellies isn't going to solve the problem. Promoting healthy eating and raising awareness will. Last but not least, when you point one finger, there are ten more pointing back at you.

In conclusion, saying fat people are solely destroying is a fallacy. While there are real health concerns to be aware of, it's not going to "make better" if fat people were suddenly skinny. You'd still have your rapists and your murderers and your thieves. Except they'd now be skinny! Who is destroying ? We are. By pointing our fingers elsewhere and believing it's everyone else's responsibility to fix .
