According to a press release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a product called Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats have been recalled. This child seat has been sold at major outlets including Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, USA Babies, as well as online and at other children's stores nationwide. The manufacturer of this seat is Bumbo International, of South Africa. Consumers should stop using this seats immediately.

The problem with the Bumbo Baby Sitter Seat is that when it is placed on a table, countertop or any elevated surface, the baby seated can arch their back and flip out, falling to the floor and possibly causing serious head injuries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 28 reports of young children falling out of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seat, including three skull fractures.

The Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats come in yellow, blue, purple, pink, aqua, and lime green. They are made from one piece of molded foam with a bottom measuring 15 inches. The seat has holes for the child's legs to go through and the back of the seat wraps completely around the child. You can see the word Bumbo imprinted on the front of the seat next to an image of an elephant. If you flip the seat over you should printed on the bottom : "Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa Material: Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030."

There is a warning listed on the back of the seat reading : "WARNING" - "Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement."

This Bumbo Baby Sitter Seat was sold in stores and online from August 2003 through October 2007 for about $40. If you have this seat in your home you can get a new warning label free of charge which says "WARNING - Prevent Falls; Never use on any elevated surface." You should remember never to use this seat on any elevated surface and most importantly never leave a child unattended at any time.

Nothing replaces parental supervision. This seems to be a case of parents either making a mistake or avoiding their responsibility and their babies suffering the consequences.

Excellent information. I know these are widely used.

Good to know, I was looking at these not too long ago

I don't think new instructions need to be sent to the owners, the owners of the seat need to use some common sense. Reminds me of the lady who got millions because her coffee was hot. Can we all say DUH.

The recall is actually only on the instructions. The bumbo can only be used, like Jan said, on the floor.

It's weird because the recall makes it look like the product was recalled, but when you go to bumbo.com they are just recalling the instructions. I was glad because I LOVE this product!
