Recall for January 27, 2012

Toyota, when is This Going to End?

We have three Toyotas - a Tundra, a Corolla, and a Lexus. Each one has already been into the shop for recalls. What disturbs me about this recall is how it is being handled.

I just realized that my 2008 GS350 is not on the recall list. There are 245,000 IS and GS models that are. The recall is for the following vehicles in the United States: 2006-2007 model year Lexus GS300/350; 2006-early 2009 Lexus IS250; and 2006-early 2008 Lexus IS350. I'm close.

This recall makes the total number of Toyota recalls 18 million!

The North American vehicles are being called back to inspect for possibly faulty installation of fuel pressure sensors. In cases where the sensor is not fastened tightly enough, fuel can leak between the gasket that connects the sensor to the fuel delivery pipes.

It seems that Lexus dealers will inspect vehicles for fuel leaks. If no leaks are found, they will tighten the sensor. If leaks are found, the gasket will be replaced and the sensor tightened.

It just so happened that my Lexus went in for its 30,000 mile check-up today. When the valet picked up the car (Yes when you have a Lexus it can get picked up.) I asked her about the recall. She had no idea but made a note on the paper I had to sign. When Lexus called me and told me the good news (not) that I had a bubble in my tire to the tune of $350.00 I asked about the recall.

I was reassured that as part of any inspection they look for fuel leaks. I asked when they were going to notify the public about the recall and actually fix the problems. The answer was that it would take a couple of months!

So in the meantime if you are driving one of these cars (as are my daughter and son-in-law), then you either have to be proactive and take it to the dealer before you get a card or hope for the best. I also was told though that it will take so long because parts have to be ordered. So even if, for example, my kids found out they had a leak, it cannot be fixed now. That sounds absurd but that is the news from Lexus to me.
