The glasses were manufactured by ARC International of Millville, N.J. The culprit at this time seems to be the paint and the paint contains excessive amounts of cadmium. While reports say that the paint is testing only a little over the recommended levels of cadmium, McDonald's is playing it safe and recalling all of the glasses. 12 million glasses were manufactured for the Shrek promotional. Of those, approx. 7 million glasses have been sold.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned McDonald's customers to stop using the recalled Shrek glasses immediately. Cadmium can be used in paint to make red and yellow. It is thought that the cadmium will leach out of the paint and will be consumed by customers.
The CPSC spokesman, Scott Wolfson said that there isn't as much cadmium in the recalled Shrek glasses as there was in the jewelry that was recalled earlier. The CPSC also said that long-time exposure to cadmium can cause health problems like bone softening and severe kidney problems.
Kudos to the CPSC and McDonald's for stepping up to the plate on the Shrek glasses so fast and enacting the recall. However, with all the bad press on the recalled China jewelry that contained too high levels of cadmium, why would ARC International of Millville, New Jersey use cadmium, much less not observe the safe amounts of it? The end consumer of the Shrek glasses would naturally be children.
There are many websites that will tell you about the symptoms of cadmium poisoning, such as Healthline. It also lists how people get cadmium poisoning. Cadmium poisoning can be misdiagnosed so if you or your child are experiencing health problems that are similar to the Healthline guidelines, see your doctor.
Recalls. Recalling products seems to be an everyday event these days. McDonald's website will have all the information that you need for refunding next week. Until then, the Shrek glasses are recalled and you should not use them.
