Recap - Big Brother 9, Episode 5

Judith Blakley
CBS does a poor job covering the biggest fight in Big Brother history, but does much better covering what is becoming known on the Internet as "Racegate." Besides these two controversies, this episode also has the live eviction of Parker and Jen and then the new HOH competition, which James and Chelsia win.

The episode starts out with a few of the houseguests talking about Amanda. Joshuah says "Her problem is her mouth." Chelsia tells "Amanda is doing a lot of gossiping," and Natalie says "She is looking for attention."

We see several of the Houseguests talking and Natalie is saying how Amanda's gossiping is annoying her. She tells everyone how Amanda had said that James was going to put her and Matt up if he won HOH. Natalie said "She's making stuff up." The conversation strikes a nerve with Chelsia, who goes outside to confront Amanda. Chelsia is upset that Amanda was going around saying things about James. Chelsia yells "James and I are a team, we are one." Amanda does not understand why Chelsia is mad at her because Amanda never mentioned Chelsia specifically. Amanda keeps yelling "Your name has never come out of my mouth." Chelsia gets heated and keeps yelling. Joshuah steps in to stir up the fighting. He cusses and screams at Amanda. Joshuah told Amanda "I think the whole house hates you!" as he splashes water at her and storms out of the hot tub and into the house.

The fight has moved away from the hot tub to next to the pool table. Alex tries to explain to Amanda how Chelsia has a right to be upset about what Amanda says about James. Alex yells "Chelsia and James are one!" He also tells her "Everyone hating on you affects me."

In all the arguing that is going on, and with Amanda finding fault elsewhere instead of listening to their complaints about her, an inappropriate comment is made concerning Amanda's father who committed suicide. Joshuah, commenting on how Amanda keeps acting as if she has done nothing wrong, say that Amanda should be given a halo. Chelsia commented back to Joshuah's comment saying that it should be a noose. Then Joshuah laughed and said "Just like her dad!" Amanda screamed "That's not funny, he hung himself!" Allison goes into the house with Amanda and tries to console her. Allison told the Diary Room that the comment about her dad was below the belt.

CBS edited many of the complaints the Houseguests made against Amanda. They also edited much of the fight. Anyone who wants to know what really happened should read my article which recaps the entire fight with links to videos where you can watch the whole thing unfold, "HUGE Fight! Big Brother 9 - Amanda Gets Slammed!" (CLICK HERE).

After the fight, Amanda is shown taking a bubblebath in the HOH bathroom with Jen, Sharon and Parker talking to her. Jen and Sharon leave to allow Parker and Amanda some alone time. They embrace.

We see Jen in the Diary Room saying "The odds are stacked against me right now." Then we see her and Shelia in the kitchen talking. She tells Shelia "I feel I deserve it more than Ryan does." They continue talking and Jen tells Shelia that "Ryan is also racist." Jen is shown talking to the girls in the bathroom telling them how sick Ryan is that she was ever with a black guy (She is referring to her ex-boyfriend).

Shelia informs Ryan about what Jen is saying about him. Matt and Allison are also in the room. Shelia says "Wait 'til you find out... a lot of stuff has been said." She is telling him that he will find out when he leaves the house and she does not want to tell him before the eviction happens because it will affect his relationship with Jen and the game. Ryan said that if it is going to affect him that much, he needs to know about it right now. Shelia finally gives in and says "She told me while we were washing dishes that you are racist... she wanted to throw you under the bus." Ryan is shocked and expresses his anger towards Jen that she would stoop that low to win a game and he defends himself "I am not a racist."

Ryan confronts Jen and tells her that she is going around saying bad stuff about him. He refuses to actually say the words aloud, but tells her that their relationship will forever be changed because what she is saying is going to affect him in the real world. Jen cries and says she has never said anything bad about him and that she loves him. She finally figures out what must have been said and says "It had to be Shelia. Was it a racist comment?"

Jen goes around defending herself saying that she never said that and that the only thing she ever said was that he had race issues, "He doesn't like the fact that I was with a black guy." Shelia and she begin to argue because Shelia says that she did not imagine the whole thing. Shelia asks "Why would you say something like that?" Jen kept denying the whole thing. Ryan tells her "You're messing with my life now.. Saying these things to get a vote.. You're messing with my life here... This isn't even about the house, this is about outside of this house."

Ryan takes Jen aside and tells her he is going to address this quickly and only once. He says "I don't have much to say to you... Do you really need this game this much that you're willing to throw our relationship away...?" Jen denies the comment and says that "I just said that you didn't agree with interracial relationships....I did not say you were racist.. I love you."

The live show section of the episode begins and Julie interviews the Houseguests. She asks Shelia and Adam how they are getting along now. Shelia says "We are really a match made in heaven." Adam says "I think we're doing well." Jen is asked if there is anything she would like to say to Ryan. Jen says "I went on the block for you... I love you." Ryan tells Jen "I love you with all my heart."

Julie asks them to raise their hands if they are confident there are no other couples in the house. Natalie, Alex and Shelia are the only ones to raise their hands.

The live eviction process begins and we are shown clips from the Diary Room as each couple gets ready to place their votes. Matt and Natalie are shown first. Matt said he wants Jen and Parker to stay. Natalie said "I love Parker's personality." Matt said that Ryan should be evicted and Allison has been conniving. Chelsia and James are next and Chelsia says she wants Allison and Ryan to stay because "They have our backs." James said that Jen and Parker are "Bad bunkmates," and Chelsia laughs and adds that Parker keeps turning on the bedroom lights. Josh and Sharon are shown and Joshuah says "I really didn't trust Jen and Parker at first." Adam and Shelia are shown next. Adam says "Allison and Ryan should go home because of Allison.. because Allison starts rumors." Shelia says "I think Allison and Ryan should stay in the game... She's my best friend and I trust her.. I think that once Jen is gone, Ryan will really be able to play the game."

Julie interviews the HOH couple in the HOH bedroom. She asks Amanda if all is forgiven from the confrontation. Amanda said "I do forgive them for what they've said." Julie then says "You both tragically lost your fathers, is there any point in the game that you've drawn strength from your fathers?" Alex replied "I draw strength from my father everyday." Julie asks Amanda if she regrets sharing about her father since it was used against her in the game. Amanda said "I don't regret it.. It definitely made me tougher in the competition." Julie then asked them if they would be able to work together as a team. Alex replied that they had to. Amanda added "I have so much faith in this guy. We're one together."

Jule Chen gives each of the nominated Houseguests a chance to address the others. Ryan says "I love each and every one of you guys." Allison says "Each and every one of you brings something to each and every one of us." Jen says "Thank you guys so much for being smoking hot." Parker says "Thanks you guys for not judging me."

Jule Chen announces "By a vote of three to one.. Jen and Parker, you are evicted from the Big Brother house." Parker stood up and said "Hugs," and Natalie jumped up and hugged him. Ryan and Jen kissed. Everyone hugged them good-bye.

Parker and Jen emerge from the house holding hands. Julie asks Jen "You went into this game with a secret," why would you choose not to hold it to yourself and use it to your advantage? Jen said that if she could do it over again, she would do the same thing. "I trust Parker, but I should not have let Ryan tell Allison." Julie then asked Parker "You thought Allison was the weak link in the chain.. You beat her to the punch," do you think things would have been different if you had tried to work with Allison to keep the secret? Parker said things could not have been different. Julie then showed them the taped good-bye messages from the other Houseguests.

The HOH competition is named "Big Brother Democracy," and they were asked six opinion based questions. They had to answer based upon what they believed the majority would answer. Their answers would come with a reward or consequence, based upon the majority answer.

Question One: Would they rather go 72 hours without hot food or without hot water. The majority answered "Hot Water." They are going to lose hot water for 72 hours.

Question Two: What would they rather have the women wear for the next 24 hours? Bathing suits or their soulmate's favorite outfit? The majority answered "Bathing Suits." The women would now wear bathing suits for 24 hours.

Question Three: Which would they rather lose for one week? Eating utensils or drinking cups? The majority answered "Drinking Cups." They would now lose their drinking cups for one week.

Question Four: Would they rather have a margarita party or an outdoor grill. The majority answered "Margarita Party." They will have a margarita party over the weekend, and without drinking cups.

Question Five: For the next week, would they rather have the men serve breakfast in bed or the women cook dinner. The majority answered "Women cook dinner." The women must now cook dinner for their own soulmate for one week.

Question Six: What would they rather go two weeks without? Workout equipment or the washing machine? The majority answered "Washing Machine." They now lost their washing machine for two weeks.

James and Chelsia won HOH with a perfect score. When asked by Julie how they felt being the new HOH, they both responded by screaming.
