Mark Whittington

"Dexter," Season 6, Episode 10, "Ricochet Rabbit" begins with Dexter dealing with the big reveal that Geller is dead and Travis is the sole Doomsday killer. It ends with Dexter having a potentially life-changing breakthrough.

Spoilers surely follow.

Dexter is able to escape from the basement ridiculously easily after first using Geller's hand to make a crime scene. Later, Debra has a panic attack inside the church, which we later find out is because she associates houses of worship with death and loss. She also finally realizes that she depends on Dexter quite a bit to feel safe.

Debra also figures out that Mathews is associated with the dead hooker in some fashion. She has already likely put two and two together and has also determined that he was in the room with her when she died.

Meanwhile, Dexter is trying to find out who Travis' next victim is. Several things are revealed. Travis killed Geller three years ago. Travis also has a couple of acolytes of his own in the form of a young couple who had become fans of Geller's blog, a fellow named Steve and his wife. Louis is able to find this out. Angel, without Quinn as his partner is too busy sleeping it off, goes to interrogate the wife alone. He gets a heavy cross upside the head for his pains.

Louis, by the way, shows Dexter his new game. It involves hunting history's classic serial killers like Dahmer, Jack the Ripper and - of course - the Bay Harbor Butcher (aka Dexter). Dexter is disgusted by this (or at least pretends to be) and tells Louis to do something else.

Later, Dexter tracks down Travis' boat. He sees who he thinks is Travis wearing a hazmat suit. When he closes in with the syringe to incapacitate him, a fight breaks out. Dexter is forced to kill the guy on the spot. It turns out that the victim is Steve.

Worse, the next tableau is to be wormwood, in the form of a poison gas attack. This is where Dexter's breakthrough comes. Because of the potential of a mass casualty attack, Dexter forgoes his pleasure of a kill and calls the police. He has, in effect, defied his dark passenger in order to save other lives.
