Recap: 'Dexter,' Season 6, Episode 7, 'Nebraska'

Mark Whittington

In "Dexter," Season 6, Episode 7, "Nebraska," in the wake of the killing of Brother Sam and Dexter's killing of his killer, our favorite serial killer is obliged to go to Nebraska to tie up some loose ends from the Trinity case.

Spoilers surely follow.

It seems that someone has murdered the wife and daughter of Trinity. Trinity is suspected. Dexter knows it cannot be him because he killed Trinity, alas not before Trinity killed Rita, Dexter's beloved wife. The son, Jonah, is naturally suspected. So it is off to Nebraska for Dexter and his new apparition, his dead brother Brian.

The journey to Nebraska is as much a journey to the dark part of Dexter's soul as it is a physical journey. Dexter seems to have totally embraced his dark side, which his dead brother encourages. This involves, in part, risky, wild behavior, including driving a car far too fast while firing a gun. Storage-room sex with a store clerk is also involved.

In the meantime, poor old Travis is trying to lead a normal life with his sister that does not involve blood sacrifices with Geller. But Geller informs him that God's will is not to be thwarted. Also, the woman Travis freed is telling the police all she knows, which is not much as she was blindfolded.

The murders are taking their toll on Debra, who has to account for a bad murder case solve rate for her department. The Doomsday Killer has really skewed the numbers. LaGuerta assures her that numbers are more reliable than people, which is not comforting for Debra, a people person in many senses of the word.

Back in Nebraska, Dexter catches up with Jonah. Everything points to him as following in his father's footsteps. There is just one problem. He didn't do it.

Jonah's sister committed suicide. His mom went wild and there was a struggle at the top of the stairs. He is genuinely sorry for what has transpired.

Dexter lets him go.

Thus, on the way back from Nebraska, Dexter's brother vanishes and is replaced by Harry, his stepfather. Dexter may still be a killer, but he has returned to the Code, proving that he has light in him after all, if only to shine upon his darkness.
