Recap of 'Pretty Little Liars' Episode "Know Your Frenemies"

Kyra Lennon
"Know Your Frenemies" was this week's "Pretty Little Liars"episode and it was packed with twists and turns. Just when it seemed like we knew who was who, something else came along posing yet more questions! Let's take a look at how the drama unfolded last night.

Hanna's story

Hanna (Ashley Benson) is being super polite to Ashley (Laura Leighton) after the loss of the stolen cash at her surprise party last week. Ashley tells Hanna there is no point worrying about it as it's already gone. She reveals that she used enough of the money to get them out of debt, the only problem she faces is replacing the money before anyone realises it is missing - which is still a pretty big problem.

At school, Hanna opens her locker and finds some money taped to the inside of the door. A note is attached from A, telling her to go to 21 Main Street to pick up Hefty Hanna's order. If you remember, Hefty Hanna was the nickname given to her by Ali before she lost weight. Shortly after finding the note, Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen) enters the school corridor accompanied by a police officer. He collects his belongings from his locker while students gather around to stare, some calling him a murderer.

Taking A's advice, Hanna goes to the cupcake shop after school and picks up the order. When she collects it, she receives a text from A telling her that to get her money back, she must eat all of the cakes in the box. As she looks up, Noel (Brant Daugherty) steps out of a car and smiles at her - that boy is looking more and more creepy every week. Opening the box, Hanna finds six cupcakes with pigs iced onto them. While she is forcing herself to eat the cakes, some boys from school sit down at the table next to hers and make oinking noises.

This prompts a flashback to when Hanna was chubbier and feeling unhappy about eating. A knock at the door made Hanna run and try to hide that she was binge eating, but Ali (Sasha Pieterse) saw her. Instead of bitching her out, as we have got so used to seeing, Ali gave her a hug and told her she could "show her how to get rid of it".

Back in the present, Hanna continues to eat the cakes while the boys beside her laugh. When she finishes she gets another text message saying she knows how to get rid of it - "it" being the calories she has just consumed. As she is contemplating what to do, Aria (Lucy Hale) walks by and joins her asking if she wants to talk about what is bothering her. Hanna says that Noel has something on her mother that could get her into trouble - still assuming he's A. Hanna then goes on to explain that Ali showed her how to throw up after eating to lose weight quickly. Aria points out the dangers and Hanna said that she stopped doing it because she learned how to take better care of herself. After talking to Aria, Hanna goes into the bathroom, determined not to make herself sick. She washes her hands and as she pulls out a paper towel, she sees "Oink Oink, A" written on it. Balling it up and throwing it away, she grabs for another paper towel and sees money on it, so she pulls again and finds a little more. She stuffs it into her bag just as Aria comes in to see if she is okay.

When Hanna returns home, she tries to stash the money back in the food box in the cupboard, but Ashley comes in and asks what she is doing. Hanna reveals the money and Ashley asks what she did to get it. Hanna says she found it in the bathroom at the cake shop and although a little disbelieving, Ashley tells her to find a better place to hide it.

Spencer's story

Late at night, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) creeps down the stairs to hear Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) and Ian (Ryan Merriman) whispering. It was hard to make out what they were saying but Ian said "we're in this together". Stairs creaked interrupting her eavesdropping and Spencer ran back to her room and found an email from A saying "married for love or an alibi?"

In the morning, Ian startles Spencer in the kitchen and the two make small talk. Ian says he hopes she will think of him as family now he is married to Melissa. Spencer makes a mention of the Hilton Head golf resort - a reference to the pieces she put together in the previous episode. Ian said he had played there and Spencer said that Ali had been to the resort with her grandmother, and the day she got home was the same day she disappeared. Ian slightly tensed but managed to keep talking his way through. It didn't strike me as a wise move for Spencer to let Ian know she suspected him in any way, but she is very curious. She seemed to get away with it though.

Later, Spencer calls the Hilton Head golf resort, using a fake accent and trying to discover when Ian was last there - on the pretence of being his wife. Emily (Shay Mitchell) asks why she is doing it and Spencer says she is sure Ian was there with Ali the week before she went missing. While Spencer is on hold, Agent Cooper (April Grace) - the detective who showed the Pretty Little Liars the video of Ali at the kissing rock - appears. Hanna joins them as Spencer finishes her phone call. Agent Cooper says there is now a solid case for Toby Cavanaugh being Ali's murderer so she probably won't be seeing the girls again. Spencer confirms Ian was at the Hilton Head the same week as Ali.

At school, the girls discuss what to do with the information. Hanna says they can't take it to Agent Cooper because there is not enough solid evidence. Aria muses whether A is actually trying to help them by giving them clues to what happened.

After school while Spencer is out jogging, she spots Toby Cavanaugh walking down the street. As he walks, people move out of his way or hurl abuse at him. Spencer follows him as he disappears down a side street and sees him sitting on the floor, crying in despair

In the middle of studying at home, Spencer tries to take a look in one of Ian's boxes but she is disturbed by the sound of the door opening. Melissa comes in with lots of bags and when Spencer tries to help, an ovulation kit falls out onto the floor. Melissa tells Spencer that she and Ian want to have a baby but they are keeping it a secret from their parents. Ian comes in, annoyed that Melissa has told Spencer but Spencer quickly takes the blame saying she looked in the bags before Melissa could stop her. When Melissa says Spencer can keep a secret, Ian gives her a knowing look and says he knows. Apparently, she can't keep a secret though because as soon as she gets to school she tells Hanna!

When Melissa and Ian leave the house for the evening, Spencer, Aria and Hanna set about going through Ian's boxes but it's clear they are not alone when shadows are seen lurking outside the house. Inside the boxes, the girls find some binoculars and a lot of comic books.

Emily's story

Emily and Maya show how cute they are in front of the other Pretty Little Liars when they say they have plans to study after school as Emily's mum will be out of town. However, Mrs Fields (Nia Peeples) arrives home early and hears giggling coming from Emily's room. Peering through the doorway she sees two pairs of bare legs and storms into the room. Both girls are wearing slightly less clothes than is necessary for studying but are just laying next to each other on the bed. Mrs Fields gets angry and when Maya (Biana Lawson) calls her by her first name, she is quickly corrected, prompting her to leave. Emily is obviously upset and tells Mrs Fields that for the first time in her life she is ashamed to have her as a mother.

As Maya left in such a hurry, she left her bag in Emily's room. Mrs Fields rummages through it, initially disappointed to find nothing incriminating in it. Then she looks more closely at a small tin, opening it up to reveal what looks like marijuana.

When Emily gets home, Mrs Fields tells her that she took Maya's backpack to her parents, and asks Emily if she is taking drugs. Emily says no but her mother says she can't see Maya anymore. Emily shouts that it won't change how she feels and her mother tells her not to bother calling her dad because he is disappointed in her too. The next morning Emily finds out that Maya's parents are sending her away for three months because of the discovery of drugs, but Emily didn't get the chance to say goodbye.

Emily has good friends though! When she goes to Spencer's to study later, the Pretty Little Liars say there is a surprise waiting in Spencer's room. When Emily goes up, she finds Maya in the room, lighting candles. The two share a very heartfelt moment together, talking and then dancing. It was a really beautiful scene and very well written and choreographed.

The Emily/Maya storyline is one that makes Pretty Little Liars stand out from other shows. It's not as if other teen shows haven't covered the topic of homosexuality, but it is quite nice to see the pleasant side of a same sex relationship - and the problems with it coming from the parents rather than their peers. That's not to say that those problems won't occur later when the relationship becomes public, but for now the plot is flowing really well.

Aria's story

At the Montgomery's, Byron (Chad Lowe) is making breakfast for the kids when Aria asks if he saw Ella (Holly Marie Combs) the night before. Byron said he did but what he thought was a date ended up being Ella telling him she is seeing other people. Aria's brother Mike (Cody Christian) is angry that Byron seems unconcerned and storms off. Aria later becomes worried when she spots Mike talking to Noel at school.

Aria then becomes further entangled in Noel's desire to get an A on his English paper. He tells Mr Fitz (Ian Harding) that Aria thinks he misunderstood their previous talk and wants him to take another look at his work, saying it is a new paper. Mr Fitz looks it over and quickly sees it is the same paper re-printed. Noel says he needs an A (interesting, with the question of whether he IS A) but Mr Fitz refuses. As the English students filter into the class, one of the kids asks Noel why he is there, to which he replies he is looking for Aria. When asked if Noel and Aria are still "hooking up", Noel says that she likes older guys, at which point Mr Fitz agrees to take another look at the paper. Later, when Noel goes back for it, it is still graded as a C.

At dinner that evening, Aria asks Mike if he is friends with Noel and Mike said that they hang out sometimes. When Aria warns Mike away from Noel, Mike tells her that Noel said Mr Fitz is having an affair with one of his students and that he is going to tell the Principal the next day. Aria becomes uncomfortable and it seems like Mike may know the truth, but she makes an excuse that she has to go to Spencer's and rushes off.

She goes to visit Mr Fitz at his apartment and asks what happened that day. Instead of telling her, he explains that he is going to resign and leave town because then Noel won't have any power over her. He also says that the way he feels for her feels right and he won't let anyone turn it into something that feels wrong. Aria tells him she loves him and they kiss. Aria then calls home and lies to her father, saying she is staying at Spencer's in order to stay at Mr Fitz's apartment for the night.

Although this story is morally wrong, there is just something that really does seem right about Aria's relationship with Mr Fitz. In terms of the law it is blatantly breaking it but seeing them saying goodbye to each other was quite harrowing and their feelings are obviously more than just passing lust.

In the school corridor the next morning, Aria watches sadly as Mr Fitz prepares to hand in his resignation. However, just as he is about to go to the Principal's office, there is a disturbance in the hallway as Noel is apprehended by teachers for stealing the answers for three mid-terms. The Pretty Little Liars all get a simultaneous message saying "A is for Alison, not Amateur", thus proving Noel is not A.

So...who is?!

Cliffhanger ending

Once the "Pretty Little Liars" are done looking through Ian's boxes and Emily has rejoined Spencer, Aria and Hanna, Aria receives a text message saying, "Don't say I never gave you anything, turn on your computer, A". The girls gather around Spencer's computer where she has received an email with a video attachment. It is the same video Agent Cooper showed them with Ali at the kissing rock - but the extended version which showed Ian too. On seeing him in the video, the girls collectively gasp and as the shot of the video drops so the only shot is of the mud on the ground, breathing and whimpers are heard until Ali's hand falls limply into the shot as she drops to the ground.

Outside Spencer's house, rustling was heard and someone ran across the grounds of Spencer's property, but when the girls went out to investigate, the person had gone.

The big question now is...what will the girls do? It seems fairly obvious that they should get that video to the police immediately but what will the consequences be? With the way things mysteriously disappear on the show, they really ought to make a back up copy of that video just in case something happens to Spencer's laptop!

The mysteries don't end there though. If Ian killed Ali - which seems certain at this point, who is A? I have suddenly become suspicious of Mike. It seems odd that he would want to hurt his own sister - but he looked very shifty when he was revealing that Mr Fitz has been having a fling with a student. It seemed like he knew the truth. On the other side though - why would he rip his own family apart by revealing his father's affair as A? It's all very confusing.

All we can do is keep tuning in to see what happens next!

I saw two minutes of this show for the first time last night. It was the scene where some girl went to visit her teacher/boyfriend. I hardly ever watch television, and was reminded of why..
