Receiving Phone Calls from a Prison Inmate

It is always exciting to get a phone call from your prison inmate. Use wisdom during these phone conversations to keep both you and your inmate safe and respected. There is a time and place for everything, and if you understand how the system works, then you will not be left with any risk.

When your inmate is in population. Population is where all inmates stay when they are on good behavior. They are able to move about, talk to and associate with other inmates, and generally have free will during their free time. However, population can be hard on some prisoners who would just like to have some peace and quiet and privacy. A lot of drama and soap opera-like behavior occurs between groups of prisoners and it can get tiring for certain inmates.

Receiving phone calls from your loved one while they are in population means that they are mostly likely near other inmates, who may also be on phone calls, when they are talking to you. Depending upon how much your inmate cares about the opinions of others, you may or may not be able to talk dirty or have phone sex with them during this time. Some people are privacy-oriented, while others do not care as long as they can have conversation with their significant other.

When your inmate is in "The Hole." This means that your prisoner has been temporarily placed under segregated (isolated) or near-segregated supervision. Usually this is the result of getting into a fight or hitting another prison or a guard. They can be in The Hole up to a month or two or as little as a day. It depends upon the cause of the placement.

When a prisoner is in The Hole, frequently they cannot phone you, but they can still write. If you do not receive a phone call at a regularly appointed time determined by you and your inmate, then they may be doing a little time in The Hole. However, you will most likely receive a letter in a few days explaining this

What many wives and girlfriends do not understand about prison is that respect is the top priority concerning dealing with other prisoners. If one guy accidentally bumps another when walking past, and the other says, "F*** you," it is appropriate, completely appropriate, to maintain respect for yourself and engage in a small scuffle. When you do NOT stand up for yourself in this manner, you are considered a wimp, respect for you dies among the other inmates, and the possibility of being sexually assaulted or gang-jumped increases dramatically. If you are a wife or girlfriend, then do not make the mistake of being naïve concerning this. Allow them to do whatever they need to do in order to make prison tolerable and livable.

Special Management. If your prisoner is repeatedly threatened, there is a threat to their life, or they have committed a more serious crime while in prison, they will be put under Special Management. This is essentially a holding place until they are moved to a more permanent form of segregation (isolation). During this time, their phone calls will be monitored heavily (sometimes by women) and it is irritating to prison staff to have to listen to phone sex at this time. You might have to wait until they have been moved to more permanent residence somewhere and there might be a phone in their cell, in that case.

It is important to maintain wisdom and discretion when receiving phone calls from your inmate. Do not discuss finances, do not give out financial, credit or banking information, and do not send them or have them write down anything on paper, because if those things are found by other inmates or staff, your money could be in danger.
