Recession Proof Jobs and Best Industries for Employment

Pam Gaulin
Some industries fare better than others, creating nearly recession-proof jobs for U.S. workers. While there is truly no such thing as 100 percent job security, some jobs are safer than others in times of economic recession. The following jobs may provide the best opportunities for steady income and employment during recession times. These jobs are also the jobs within the fastest growing occupations, the occupations with the largest job growth, as well as the top growing jobs through 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Based on these statistics, the following choices may be the best options for choosing a recession-proof job.

Recession Proof Jobs

These recession proof jobs are based on national statistics and expectations by the BLS. The employment conditions and needs in your home state may reflect a different picture.

Fastest Growing Occupations and Largest Job Growth

Healthcare

The strongest industry for employment in the next eight years is the health care sector. Jobs in the health care sector "are expected to make up seven of the 20 fastest growing occupations" between 2006 and 2016, according the the BLS.

Within the health care sector one of the jobs with the largest expected job growth is Registered Nurses. Other recession-proof jobs in the health care field include personal and home care aides, home health aides, nursing aides, orderlies and hospital attendants.

Home health care services is the fastest growing industry in the health care sector, making it a recession-proof job in the right geographic areas.

It's not only the health care industry catering to people that offer job growth. Two of the top 10 fastest growing occupations are veterinary technologists and technicians, and veterinarians. (BLS)

Tech Jobs

Tech jobs are also leading the pack of the fastest growing occupations, according to the BLS. The tech jobs which are among the fastest growing occupations in the Tech sector include network systems and data communications analysts, computer software engineers, computer systems analysts, and database administrators.

Computer software engineers who create applications and Network systems and data communications analysts are both included on the list of BLS's occupations with the largest expected job growth.

U.S. high tech jobs increased by 1.6 percent in 2007, with unemployment rates below two percent in many high-tech fields. The national unemployment rate in June of 2008 for all jobs stood at 5.5 percent.

One of the fastest growing industries, according to the BLS is for "management, scientific, and technical consulting services." Also in this category of fastest growing industries are computer systems design and related services and software publishers.

Risky Business and Recessions

One area of the economy which poses risky employment for workers is in the retail sector. The BLS has the retail sector listed as the sector with the second largest job growth, second only to registered nurses.

However, the retail business is purely driven by consumer spending. Retail jobs also tend to be on the lower end of the pay scale. The other occupation which can be classified in this way is food service. The BLS has food service work as one of the top five jobs with growth, yet this sector is also driven by consumer spending power.

More Recession Proof Jobs

The other jobs which may provide recession-proof employment, based on various tables and statistics from the BLS include teachers, child care workers, social service workers, office clerks, personal care professions (ex. skin care, manicurists), customer service representatives and janitors.

As more baby boomers start to reach retirement age, the need for health care workers will grow. My girlfriend is self-employed and has to turn down work.

Thanks for the comment, Jon. It was published in July, as a deadlined news piece. I am working on a follow up piece. The tech information was based on actual job increase statistics (not opinion) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Tech jobs are recession proof? Since when? Most tech jobs can be outsourced easily. This article was way too short and didn't have enough.

Don't forget the military! As a Navy wife, I am a big fan of my husband's job security, not to mention the healthcare, housing, etc.

Very timely article. With the way the economy is going, jobs are getting rarer.

Now, L. we can't give away all our secrets, can we? :-)

Great article. I surprises me that you did not take a look at online content writers. It is an area that continues to grow, though there are few that can make a true living from it.
