The field of Law Enforcement has been growing by leaps and bounds, especially over the past few years. Due to new technology keeping officers safe and increasing incentives such as better pay and benefits is very appealing, especially when times are hard. On average, the national police officer's annual salary is $44,000, according to Indeed.com. This, along with pension, is a very strong eye catcher. Most police agencies today require some college credits. Even if they do not, it is highly recommended that you get college credits, as the competition is getting stronger and stronger to get a place in this appealing career. Police agencies are looking for the most qualified personnel to fill positions, so make sure to market yourself and find the best experience you can before applying.
Security work is very closely related to police work. In fact, it may be a good idea for police recruits start out as a security officer to get experience in the field before taking the academy tests. According to Indeed.com, the average national annual salary of a security officer is $37,000. Most states require a certification class, background check, and fingerprinting to become a security officer. The duties of a security officer include patrolling the site/building, making sure areas are safe for employees, and monitoring camera monitors. There is plenty of room for climbing up the ladder in security work, as most organizations have a paramilitary style system. This allows for organization as well as fairness in the pay scale. Many companies need security officers due to insurance requirements and can not afford to scrimp.
Both of these careers are known to be recession proof. Obtaining one of these careers will not only secure you financially, but will create a feeling of accomplishment and importance in your community. People will always need protective services for their homes and businesses. If you are looking for a job or even a career that is sure to withstand the hard economy, Police and Security jobs will always be out there.
