Recession vs. Celebrity News

Jessica Ann
When I woke up this morning I immediately turned on my computer to look for a job as I have been doing for every morning for a couple months now after being laid off my job. I also turned on the television to catch up on some of the news to hear 10,000 people laid off here and 3,000 people laid off there and so on. When I went back to the computer to start my search, guess what is the featured news on the front page of Yahoo! Do you think it was all really important news for us to search? Maybe articles on the presidency? No. What I see is an article about the recession we are now in the midst of, along with an article about the fact that Beyonce has gained 15 pounds. Yesterday it was money woes and an article about Britney's mistrial over her driving without a license. Seriously people, is this what we need to see. I am sickened everyday to have real news that affects each and everyone of us mixed with ridiculous articles about Miley Cyrus' parents closing down Disneyland for her 16th birthday. Who cares?!

I realize a lot of people out there really do want to know why Beyonce gained 15 pounds, but when I am out of work, facing the prospect of losing my home and then some, do I really need to see this as a featured article? If I or anyone else really cares, then let us search the entertainment news. I really don't need poor Britney's driving mishaps to be bigger news than the millions of families out there who need help. I can't imagine any reason why this kind of reporting shares a front page search on any news site.

If I sound bitter, that's because I am bitter and I am so over hearing about celebrity's and their meaningless so-called newsworthy tidbits. If this is the kind of news that editors think we really care about, then I think we need to lay off those people and give the rest of us their jobs so we can report on what really makes sense, not on whether or not Clay Aiken is gay or if Lindsey Lohan is drunk again. Is there any sane person out there that thinks Beyonce gaining 15 pounds for a film role, a role which she'll probably get paid several million dollars for, is deemed as important as the recession?

When times aren't as bad and a majority of us who have lost our jobs have found new ones, that's when I'll accept front page news about celebrity's again. In the meantime, leave this senseless stupidity in the entertainment section for those of us who give hoot. If we really care about Beyonce gaining 15 pounds for which she'll get about $1 million dollars per pound gained, then let us decide to go search for that article. I don't think we need this kind of news basically thrown in our faces as being as important as the crisis and state of our nation the rest of us are facing. While so many of us will be out on the street within months, I guess we can all sleep better knowing that Britney can still drive.

Terrific article! I couldn't agree more. I ran into an acquaintance a few days ago who had been questioned by the police as suspect in removing campaign signs from her area. She didn't do it, I don't think, but she refused a lie detector test and they simply accepted that. I asked her if she had read a columnist's article about the incident. Her answer was a self righteous "I don't read newspapers and I don't watch news on TV." Apparently she is one of those who follows the ups and downs of Lindsay, Britney, etal but is totally uninformed on serious issues. Very annoying. I don't even want to know people like that.
