Recession and Writing Equals Happiness

Della R. Buckland
According to Dictionary.com, Recession is a general slowdown in economic activity over a sustained period of time. We are indeed in a recession although most will not admit to it. Businesses are closing around the United States.

People are losing their jobs, their home and even quiet possibly their dreams. The number of the unemployed is rising and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a job. Because of this, depression sets in and doubt clouds one's joys in life. But that does not have to be the case. You just have to sit down and think about what truly makes you happy and what you enjoy doing. Now figure out a way to make that joy and happiness help you earn an income. Search the internet (though beware of scams) and you will find thousands of ideas and possible ways to start. It should be noted that you will not make much to start, but persistence and love of what you are doing will help you to keep going.

My story is similar, I became a paralegal in 1997 working for a small law firm in San Diego's East County. Business was steady when I was hired on and I enjoyed my job.

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2004, but continued to work. Business began to slow because of the growing recession. Unfortunately, my health grew worse and in 2008 I was forced to leave a job that I had been with for eleven years.

I had always considered myself a writer, but never was published. Now with no job and fighting for my disability, I fell into a depression. I sat and thought about what I truly wanted. One day, I was surfing the internet and happened upon Associated Content's website. I decided to give it a try and signed up. I wrote a small article and to my amazement Associated Content purchased the article. My heart soared and I once again discovered my love of writing, be it fiction or not.

With over 200 articles written and published, it gave me the courage to try my hand at fiction (my first true love) and to my amazement and joy, I am now selling short stories and working on my first novel.

Because of the recession, I have rediscovered my passion for writing. Because of my passion, I do not mind waking up early or staying up late to work. Although, there are no medical benefits or paid vacation leave, I am okay with that. It is hard to believe that something as bad as a recession brought me back to what I truly enjoy.

So, a bit of encouragement, do not let the recession get you down, you can always find a way to bring you back up - just look to your joys and hobbies.

Bruce - AC does not offer an upfront payment for short stories - only pay per view, but if you want to get your name out there - it is a good way to start. I have done the same thing - check out "Lady of the Seventh Stone" My first short story. Thank you for reading my article.
