Recipe for Homemade Dog Treats

Turkey Treats: Nutritious and Tasty

A Powers
My dog is a valued member of my family. When my husband and I adopted him, we wasted no time filling our home with toys and snacks. We chose a nutritious pet food to ensure his health, but found that he regularly suffered from an upset stomach. I soon traced the problem to the treats we were using during our training sessions. Unfortunately, manufacturers of pet products are allowed to include potentially diseased or otherwise contaminated organs and tissues from animals not fit for human consumption. I couldn't possibly determine what had hurt my puppy, and decided to use homemade treats.

Many pet lovers have shared their favorite recipes on the Internet. However, I repeatedly ran into an uncommon problem. My dog doesn't like peanut butter, the most common flavoring agent in handmade pet treats. After researching various formulas, I created my own recipe for training treats. We call them Turkey Treats because our pet is partial to the turkey-rice variety.

The delicious flavor of Turkey Treats is an unexpected ingredient: baby food! When choosing a variety that appeals to your pet, read the ingredients list carefully and choose one that does not include onions or other additives that are potentially harmful to dogs. Of course, the most obvious choice is a meat variety. But dogs enjoy vegetables as well. You may find that your furry friend prefers sweet potatoes or squash.

I know that you'll find homemade treats to be the best choice for your pets. They're fun to bake, nutritious and tasty. Best of all, they give you more control over your pet's diet. If fluffy has an allergic reaction or digestive problem due to an ingredient in the treats, the culprit can be easily identified. Even if your dog can't have rice, you can turn Turkey Treats into beef and wheat pasta treats or mixed vegetable treats. Enjoy this recipe and all the benefits it brings.

Turkey Treats

Ingredients:

1 jar of baby food

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a measuring cup, mix the baby food with enough water to make ½ cup liquid. Stir the liquid and flour together until it forms a dough. Knead the dough for a few turns.

Turn a cookie sheet upside down. Sprinkle liberally with flour. Roll and pat the dough until it is no more than ¼ inch thick. If there is any baby food left in the jar or clinging to the sides of the measuring cup, brush it over the top of the dough. Score the top into small squares with a sharp knife.

Bake for 10-25 minutes. Cut the cooled treats into squares and refrigerate in a sealed container.

The number of treats that this recipe yields depends on the thickness of your dough and the size of the squares. However, mine last for weeks.
