Recipe: Homemade Spaghetti Sauce and Meatballs

Drew Bush
Are you tired of eating the jarred sauce with your spaghetti? Sure, it is less timely to make when your weekly schedule is hectic. When things quiet down though, try this recipe and you'll really be able to enjoy real old fashioned spaghetti. There is just nothing like the real stuff. This recipe, like many, has been in my family for many years.

Ingredients (Double Recipe):

2 onions sliced
2 large cans (28 oz. each) whole tomatoes and 4 small cans (6 oz. each) tomato paste
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon Oregano
Pepper
2 tbsp sugar
2 tsp garlic powder

Directions:

Fry the onions in a frying pan with a small amount of olive oil until they are light brown. In a large pot or slow cooker, add garlic powder, tomatoes, spices, and sugar. Add one can of water for every can of tomato paste used (3 cans of water for four cans). Let the sauce come to a boil and then set the heat on low and let it simmer for about three hours.

Directions and ingredients for meatballs:

Ingredients:

1 lb beef (lean)
one egg
bread crumbs
1 onion chopped

Directions:

Put the beef into a big bowl, add one egg, onion, and rounded (mounded 1/4 cup of bread crumbs). Mix and squish with hands until it is completely mixed. If the meat is too sticky, add more breadcrumbs. Roll the meat into medium sized balls. Put the rolled balls into a frying pan on medium heat. Cook the meatballs until they are brown on all sides. Then add them into the pot of homemade spaghetti sauce.

You're entire house will smell like an Italian restaurant (Olive Garden anyone?) and your mouth will not stop watering. Some good old garlic bread will complete this classic Italian meal. It's really simple to make. Get a back of french rolls and cut each one in half. On each slice, apply butter, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Do not add too much garlic powder or it will be too strong. Put in a toaster oven and set it to broil. Watch it closely as it will only take a few minutes to brown.
