Recipe for a Rich, Made-from-Scratch Hot Chocolate

Dena E. Bolton
There is nothing like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter's day. Instead of grabbing a package of instant, though, try making this rich, creamy version.

Ingredients

Serves 8
1/2 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Water
Pinch Salt
5½ Milk
2 cups Whipping cream
2 teaspoons Vanilla extract

Directions for Recipe for a Rich, Made-from-Scratch Hot Chocolate

1
Melt the chocolate chips in a 3-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly.
2
Stir in sugar, water, and salt. Cook over medium heat. Stir constantly using a wire whisk until mixture comes to a boil -- about 4-5 minutes.
3
Stir in the milk and whipping cream and continue to cook on medium heat, stirring constantly, until completely heated -- about 12-15 minutes. Do not allow the mixture to come to a boil!
4
After the mixture is heated through, add vanilla and beat with either a wire whisk or hand-held blender until frothy. Serve.
Tip
You can top your cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream or marshmallows. You can also garnish with chocolate shavings, orange peel, cinnamon, or nutmeg. For extra warmth, add 1-2 teaspoons of your favorite liqueur.
