Reconsider Your Motives for Being Pro-Choice and the Results of Letting Selfishness Rule Your Life

This article is written in response to Nochka's Abortion: A Response to the Pro-Life Arguments.

Abortion has gotten to be an ugly debate that most people are tired of hearing about or thinking about. It seems that the debate only spins in circles and that people really don't seem to be easily swayed. Most people that I have spoken with about this topic are so firmly rooted in either side that they don't particularly want to listen to the arguments. Rather than roll over the main points, I'd rather get to the root of the problem and figure out why people have abortions in the first place, or even consider having them.

There are several main reasons women choose to have abortions. Often, a woman accidentally becomes pregnant from having unprotected sex. She is most likely in a non committed relationship, or is just not responsible enough in her own mind to deal with a child. She may be a high school student, whose parents would lose it if they found out. Or maybe she is in college, and doesn't want to have to deal with dropping out of school and raising a child. Perhaps it is a money issue, and the woman sees no way of how to possibly feed and support the child financially. In more unfortunate cases, the woman is a victim of rape or incest and cannot emotionally handle a child that would result from this.

The women's decision may also be influenced by the man in her life. He may be unwilling to pay for child support, or unwilling to stay with her should she have the baby. Maybe the parents refuse to help support the child monetarily and thus the woman's decision is also influenced.

All of these reasons seem to be somewhat legitimate, especially in today's society. In fact it may seem silly not to have an abortion in some cases. I remember many cases in high school where women did not even consider the alternative to having an abortion, it was really the only foreseeable way to deal with the circumstance. The parents and boyfriend backed her up 100% as did most of her naieve friends.

But what if there happened to be a society that existed where children were routinely sacrificed into volcanoes so that they wouldn't erupt. Perhaps the children are thrown off of cliffs so that the god's would be pleased. Maybe a baby would be sacrificed here and there to the food gods so that the society could survive? Or maybe they should be sacrificed to the god's of wealth so that those gods would be pleased?

Does that sound ridiculous? I hope no one is actually thinking "well, if it works for them, sure." That would actually be a typical response for a gray society, however, that was not my point. The point is that sacrificing children to false god's is completely foolish and that is exactly what abortion does.

What false god's? How about money, self-image, self-consciousness, and probably the ugliest god of us all, ourselves. Really, by choosing to have an abortion, it is choosing to 'worship' yourself. That is pretty sickening. Sure, there are many who would say it is selfish to bring a child into the world if you can't take care of it. Here's some good news, you don't have to take care of it all by yourself. That's not what God ever intended in the first place.

The giver of life has a purpose for that life. By destroying it, you are denying another person the chance to live. Maybe you can't take care of it the way you would like to, but someone can.

Also, most people who have ever had an abortion regret it and experience serious depression and guilt.

Obviously, being pregnant when you don't want to be is an awful feeling. It involves humiliation, worry, and many other negative consequences. However, abortion will leave you worse than you were to begin with. If we continue to value ourselves more than we value other people, especially children, then what kind of a society will we end up with? Rather than living for yourself, live for a higher purpose and know that by trusting God, He will be your strength to get you through the tough situations of life. Who knows, the baby may end up being an even bigger blessing than you ever could have imagined.

Abortion is a big decision and one that will affect your conscience for the rest of your life. Also, the cost and waiting list for adoption is extremely high and there are thousands of couples who are more than willing to adopt.

Pregnancy from rape is extremely rare. As reasons for legalizing abortion rape and incest are nothing more than emotional screens used by those profiting from abortion.

I don't think anyone has any say in whether or not a woman carries her baby to term, first and foremost, that woman is the one who has to do all of the work, when it comes to carrying, baring, and raising the child. I have had two pregnancies, one ended in abortion & one ended in my beautiful daughter. At the time of my abortion I was pro-life, I was also 16, and in "love" with someone who beat the tar out of me. I thank the powers that be everyday I didn't bring a child into that life, where the child would have been beat everyday by his/her father. As a mother, who's baby's father ran off, I knew I was ready to handle the responsibility on my own. Would it be better to force an opinion on a mother and have them later regret their forced decision, and abandon their child into poverty, and a life without a mother or family?

Wow, how thought-provoking a reply. And if you don't like murder, then don't murder - but don't you dare tell other people that THEY can't murder, and don't let those bloody politicians get in the way with their anti-murder laws. (Check out Stand to Reason at str.org for this kind of comeback - good stuff!) Abortion comes down to a singular issue - as it always has - and that is, Is that fetus a person or a blob of flesh? If it's a blob of flesh, then no other arguments are necessary. If she's a person, then no other arguments could ever be enough to justify these thousands upon thousands of outright murders. The point of birth isn't a good enough distinction (http://shinbone.home.att.net/congtran.1.htm), but the point of conception is where the DNA is distinct from the mother's - thus, the fetus is no longer merely part of the mother's body.
