Recreational Activities for Seniors in Montrose, Colorado

Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy the Ride

Sandy James
The other day I was looking around for websites and newspaper articles on recreational activities for seniors in Montrose, Colorado. I was pleased to find that there are many recreational activities for seniors in Montrose, Colorado. The autumn season is beautiful here, a time to get out and enjoy the scenery and weather, so I was happy to find many different recreational activities for seniors.

Montrose County offers a variety of recreational activities for seniors through their Montrose Recreation District department. I was encouraged to see recreational activities for all ages offered. They have a category entitled "Fifty+ Activities" where I found some great hikes and tours and was pleasantly surprised by the number of recreational activities for seniors offered.

The scenery in Montrose County is breathtaking and to be outside enjoying the sights, sounds, and weather is great for any senior. I found line dancing, 4-wheel drive tours, hikes, and boat tours offered by the Montrose Recreation District. They also offer classes in certain arts and crafts such as ceramics and mixed media painting for seniors.

Seniors have a harder time to drive on mountain roads and the availability of these recreational activities by the Montrose Recreation District gives them the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Here's some of the recreational activities for seniors in Montrose, Colorado that are offered:

Senior Hikes

There are three hikes listed on three different dates. One hike will be at Grand Mesa on September 9th, another hike at the Colorado National Monument on October 8th, and the third hike at the Dennis Weaver Memorial on November 5th. All of these places are fun hikes and will give seniors a wonderful change of scenery while getting some exercise.

A 4-Wheel Drive Tour for Seniors

So, you thought recreational activities for seniors are boring? Not this one! This very scenic and adventurous 4-wheel drive tour travels through Ophir Pass, Telluride, Last Dollar Road, and the fabulous Dallas Divide. Lots of fall colors and scenery along this route. Dallas Divide is stunning in its golden hues and Ophir Pass is beautiful no matter what season you're in. If the timing is right, Last Dollar Road has beautiful golden-yellow aspen stands that will leave a memorable impression. This tour is on September 30th and is a great activity for seniors.

Senior Trip to the Silverton Train

It's about a three-hour drive to the Silverton steam-powered train for an unforgettable ride through the San Juan Mountains. This is an old mining track that was created over a century ago. Stories of the Old West will accompany this ride and it's one of the most popular recreational activities for seniors. There are some steep cliff hangers on this train ride and beautiful scenery around every bend.

There are also classes offered once a week in ceramics and mixed media painting for seniors. These are two great crafts that seniors can turn into a hobby. I know several ladies in their 80's who enjoy painting and meet once a week for this hobby. It's a wonderful activity for seniors to express themselves.
