Recreational Activities for Seniors in Boston, Massachusetts

Rochelle Connery
Kids aren't the only ones who get bored on summer break - senior citizens are equally as anxious to find something fun and productive to do. In Boston, Massachusetts, there's no shortage of senior-oriented tours and attractions where the young at heart can spend the day on an adventurous yet laid-back Boston excursion.

Old Town Trolley Tour of Boston

During the Old Town Trolley Tour, seniors can relax and enjoy a 105-minute trolley ride, which makes the rounds of some of Boston's most famous landmarks. This narrated tour includes visits to New England Aquarium, Boston's Little Italy, the USS Constitution, Bunker Hill Monument, Beacon Hill, M.I.T., Newbury Street, Chinatown, the Theater District, and Faneuil Hall Marketplace. If you bring your senior citizen ID card, you will be eligible for a $27.90 ticket (as opposed to the $30.00 ticket), which entitles you to a full days' worth of "hop on, hop off" trolley rides, which make routine stops at these attractions. Your ticket also includes free admission to the Old State House Museum!

Spirit of Boston Lunch Cruise

You don't have to pack a suitcase and buy an airline ticket to a faraway land to enjoy a special summertime cruise in Boston. For a Monday -Saturday ticket ($48.34) or a Sunday Brunch ticket ($58.82), you'll be given star treatment, starting with the cabaret-style ocean cruise ship seating arrangement, which allows you to get up a stroll around the ship when you please. You're welcome to an all-you-can-eat Grande Buffet, serving your favorite foods as well as the catch of the day. During dessert, you'll be treated to a live, Broadway-style performance, and afterwards, you can get up and dance to a live DJ mix of line dance and Top 40 hits. The cruise ship is handicap accessible.

For a $17.25 senior ticket, a self-guided tour of the New England Aquarium will reap a penguin exhibit featuring rockhopper penguins, a freshwater gallery filled with New England pond and Amazon River marine life, as well as a brand new hands-on shark and stingray experience. Lobsters and other marine life native to New England can be found in the Gulf of Maine exhibit - which might just be the "ugliest" exhibit of all! One thing's for sure; there's never a dull moment at the New England Aquarium!
