Rectangle Granny Square Baby Blanket Pattern

Traditional Granny 'Square' in a Rectangle

Marie Anne St. Jean
Granny squares are easy to crochet, but what if you want to work quickly in one large piece, but prefer a rectangle instead of a square? Once you know how to start the first two rounds or so of the rectangle, it's easy to complete in the same manner as a regular granny square.

Rectangle Granny Square Pattern

Skill Level: Easy

Materials Needed:

Size H crochet hook
Approx 17 oz worsted weight yarn

Terms Used:
Ch = chain
DC = double crochet
St = stitch
Sp = space
Ss = slip stitch
Cluster = 3 DC in same stitch

Basic instructions are for blanket made in a single color. See note 1 below for using more than one color.
When worked in 25 rounds, this baby blanket will measure approximately 28" x 32". See note 2 below if you'd like to make a larger blanket.

Foundation chain: Ch 18

Round 1: (2DC, ch 2, 3DC) in 3rd ch from hook (starting in third ch from hook makes 1st DC), *skip 2 st, 3DC cluster in next, skip 2 st, repeat from * 3 times. (3DC, ch 2, 3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in last ch (will start the turn down the other side). *sk 2, 3DC cluster in next (will be same st as cluster on other side), sk 2, repeat from * 3 times, ending 3DC in first ch, ch 2, join with ss in top of first DC.
Result: 3 - 3DC clusters on each end, 4 - 3DC clusters down each side, opposite each other.

Round 2: Ch 3 (becomes 1st DC), turn. (2DC, ch 2, 3DC) in ch 2 sp (makes first corner), 3DC cluster in sp between clusters in previous round 5 times. (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in ch 2 sp (makes second corner), repeat once (making third corner), 3DC cluster in sp between clusters of previous round 5 times, (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in last ch 2 sp to make fourth corner, join with ss in top of first DC.

Round 3: Ch 3 (becomes 1st DC), turn. 2DC in same sp, (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in first corner, 3DC cluster in sp between each cluster of previous round 6 times, (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in second corner, 3DC cluster in sp between two clusters of previous round (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in third corner, 3DC cluster in sp between each cluster of previous round 6 times, (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in fourth corner, join with ss in top of first DC.

Rounds 4-25: Repeat round 3 with (3DC, ch 2, 3DC) in each corner and 3DC clusters between each cluster of previous round. Bind off, weave in ends.

Note 1: If using more than one color, attach subsequent colors in any corner or sp between clusters. I like to vary where I start subsequent rounds so that it doesn't form a visible line in the completed project. I prefer not to join in a corner space, but alternate between a cluster on all four sides of my rectangle.

Note 2: This blanket can be made larger by increasing the number of rounds, but it will look less like a rectangle the more rounds you complete. Following the pattern as written above, the length of the completed blanket is approx 4" longer than the width. You can increase the foundation chain in multiples of three to increase the length of the blanket, making a more proportional rectangle.

    Thanks for this pattern. I had a pattern for a large oblong granny square afghan years ago and lost it. I have been searching for one recently. I am going to try this pattern using regular yarn to see if it will work.

    You make this beautiful piece look so easy! I am impressed with the ease in which you explain this type of gorgeous art; even though I don't do this type of work.Thanks for sharing with all the arts people that wish to do this caliber of work.
