Recycle Cell Phones

Don't Trash that Old Cell Phone, Give it New Life!

Pam Freer
We all love to upgrade. When our contract is up and we're allowed to upgrade, most of us do ... even if we don't really need a new cell phone. Fancier and newer is always better. That old cell phone became obsolete the day after you got it.

But, what do you do with the old cell phone? You know ... the one that still works just fine but is slightly out of date? There are many good options for recycling your old cell phone. Before you do, be absolutely sure to clear away all of your personal information and contacts. After you've done that, check out these great options for recycling your old cell phone:

Cell Phones for Soldiers. What happens to your old cell phone when you donate it to Cell Phones for Soldiers? Your old cell phone is sold to a recycling company and the funds are used to purchase calling cards for soldiers. Each donated phone provides an hour for a soldier. "Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money." For more information on how to donate your old cell phone to Cell Phones for Soldiers, check out the link below.

Local Abuse Shelters. Most local shelters will accept old cell phones as a donation. If you donate your old cell phone to a shelter it will be given to someone in need. Since the 911 emergency option is never disconnected, your old cell phone can be used in an emergency situation. Be sure to also donate your charger so the recipient can keep the old cell phone charged at all times.

Schools/ Charitable Organizations. Many local schools and charitable organizations collect old cell phones as a fund raiser. The old cell phones are sold to a recycling company for cash. The amount received for each old cell phone depends on the make and model, but all old cell phones are worth something.

At any rate, do not throw your old cell phone away. Clear all the personal information, and donate your old cell phone to a worthy cause. Check out "Cell Phones for Soldiers", or call your local school or shelter. Besides being environmentally friendly, you'll be doing a good deed by recycling your old cell phone. Also, don't forget to ask for a donation slip for donating your old cell phone. If you itemize your taxes, you will be able to claim the deduction for donating your old cell phone.
