Who needs spring cleaning when we're heading into fall?

This weekend Brooklynites from all over the borough can reduce their clutter at home by getting rid of some of that pesky e-waste piling up at home. Disposing of old electronic equipment can do a whole lot for your closet space as well as the environment.

Even though only 1% of our total trash consists of electronic waste, it can be a problem. The e-waste we get rid of including computers, printers, televisions, monitors, keyboards, mice, and cables actually make up about 40% of the lead found in our landfills. Other toxic materials are also found including cadmium, mercury, and barium oxide. These can hurt the environment as well as the people and animals nearby.

This year marks the first electronic waste recycling event at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The event is rain or shine and will be from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on October 2. Recyclers can drop their e-waste at Pier 1 which is located at Furman Street between Old Fulton and Doughty.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park e-waste recycling event is held in association with the Lower East Side Ecology Center.
