Recycle and Repurpose Your Shower Curtain

Your Nasty Shower Curtain Can Be Reused Many Ways Outside of the Bathroom

A nasty shower curtain doesn't have to end up in the landfill when it's done in the bathroom. Even with mold and mildew, your shower curtain can be recycled and repurposed many ways.

Recycle Your Shower Curtain in the Yard

Fold your nasty shower curtain to several thicknesses to kneel on while tending your garden to keep your knees clean and dry. Leave it large enough for room to put your gardening hand tools beside you, then drag the shower curtain to the next spot as you move about.

A shower curtain can be used to haul leaves or debris in the yard during fall cleanup chores. If it's a thin shower curtain liner, you may need to fold in half to be strong enough for some of the heavy duty work.

If planning a new garden space, put a dark colored shower curtain over the area where you want to remove grass and weeds. Position rocks or bricks to hold the shower curtain in place and leave it for several weeks to allow grass and weeds to die. In warmer weather this method will take less time, and the darker the shower curtain the better.

Repurpose Your Shower Curtain as a Drop Cloth

Painting some rooms in your home? Use a shower curtain to catch paint drips and spills instead of buying a drop cloth for that purpose.

Your Car Can Use Your Old Shower Curtain

When changing your oil or doing other minor auto repairs, put the recycled shower curtain where you can lie on it to keep your clothes clean and dry. The shower curtain will also catch drips from auto lubricants before they can stain your driveway. Keep an old shower curtain in your trunk to kneel on when you have to change a tire unexpectedly.

If you don't have a garage, placing an old shower curtain across your windshield will keep it free from snow and ice (and if you park under a tree, free of bird droppings too!). Tuck the bottom of the shower curtain under your windshield wipers and put a brick or block of wood to hold it down on the roof of the car (be careful not to scratch your car's paint job).

Note: If you don't like the thought of repurposing your nasty shower curtain or liner if it has mold and mildew, drop it into your washing machine with a few towels and wash on the gentle cycle with a little bleach. Do not put into your clothes dryer if the shower curtain or liner is made of plastic (look for a tag with care instructions from the manufacturer). Even if it tears slightly in the wash, it can still be recycled for the purposes in this article.

Now I really liked this. ;-) I never throw away an old shower curtain. They are great for a lawn mower cover too.

Great ideas and just in time. One of my showers has a curtain that is in need of being repurposed. :)

I know this wouldn't be allowed in areas where the housing was built on deserts...but we used to use old shower curtains on a grassy hill in the summer. Peg them down with tent stakes and let water trickle from the top... Instant water slide!
