Recycle Time

Glenda Glayzer

We live in a throw-away society. Despite recycle bins available everywhere, the cheaper things get to buy, the more likely we are to throw them away than to get them repaired.

We throw away batteries and pieces of furniture, computers and razors. It's a good thing CDs are flat because I got tired of turning them into coasters and started tossing them into the garbage.

What I object to is that now society is returning the favor by throwing me away.

"I'm experienced, mature, expert, and knowledgeable", I say on my resume.

"I can sing, dance, act, paint, sculpt, and write. I've been a working chef, location sound recordist and computer programmer. I can design and build websites, take wonderful pictures and run an office." Ta-da!

But I can't seem to get anyone in
Los Angeles
to even offer me a job.

I've massaged and exercised my resume until it's strong enough to run the
Marathon
. I've dummied it down so that people will realize they don't have to pay me a lot of money to work for them. Nope.

I used to joke that there are only two reasons to live in
Los Angeles
:
"Number one, you can make lots of money in the entertainment business, and number two, if you lose everything and have to sleep on the sidewalk, you won't freeze to death."

Now I just say, "Angelenos, be careful where you step!"
