Recycled Craft: How to Make a Wine Cork Bulletin Board

Elizabeth Beeson
A wine cork bulletin board can be a great craft project for wine lovers and crafters alike. By using recycled wine corks, anyone can create a unique bulletin board that will add charm and function to an office or kitchen.

In order to complete this project, you will need 100-200 old wine corks, industrial-strength adhesive or hot glue, a large wood frame, a piece of plywood (cut to fit in the frame), paint and a small paint roller

Start by using the industrial-strength adhesive to glue the plywood into the wooden frame. Spread the glue on the inside of the frame and then press the plywood into the frame. Set the plywood aside to dry for around 12 hours. If necessary, lay a heavy book on the back of the plywood to hold it in place within the frame.

Next, paint the frame any desired color with a latex-based wall paint. Paint brushes can be used, but rollers help to hide messy brush marks. Allow the first coating to dry for around 12 hours and then paint a second coating. Allow the second coating to set untouched overnight. Also always make sure to paint in a well-ventilated area to avoid fumes.

Next lay out the corks and play with different ways to lay them in designs like the one below. Once a design has been found and the frame has dried, the corks can be applied to the plywood inside of the frame.Once the design is layed out, start gluing the corks onto the plywood one at a time using the industrial-strength adhesive. Use a large amount of glue to make sure that the corks connect to the plywood. Once all of the corks have been glued, set the board aside to dry for 24 hours.

A hanging bracket can be added to the back of the frame by a few small nails. If a hanging bracket is not available, a wire can be suspended between two eye bolts. By using a tense wire, it can be twisted around the two eye bolts and easily hold the weight of the bulletin board.

When the cork board has dried completely, it can be hung on a wall and tacks can be placed into the cork. Due to the durability of the glue, the board should last for years and add charm to any room in the house.
