For this project, you will need (per coaster):
- Half inch thick plywood
- Jigsaw or other tool to cut plywood
- Four inch circle shaped stencil
- Three inch circle shaped stencil
- Pencil
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White
- Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
- Sheet music
- Tea bags
- Small shallow pan of warm water
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Sponge brush
- Newspaper, craft paper, and/or a large drop cloth
For easiest cleanup after the completion of this coaster project, it is best to first cover your space with newspaper, craft paper, and/or a large drop cloth prior to starting. Place a sheet of half inch thick plywood out flat. In pencil, trace a four inch circle shape from stencil onto the wood. Create one four inch circle per coaster you intend to create. Very carefully cut out the circle shapes from the wood with a jigsaw or other tool. Sand the surface of the wooden circles and the edges with medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust using a tack cloth or other similar style of soft cloth.
Lay the circle shapes out flat. Prime both sides of them using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for a couple hours before painting them using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White. Continue to apply coats of white paint until any color variations in the plywood or no longer visible. Dry overnight.
Place the sheet music flat on a self healing mat, face side down. In pencil, trace a three inch circle from stencil directly onto the paper. Cut out the circle shape from the sheet music using a craft knife. Dip a tea bag into a shallow pan of warm water to moisten. Pat the tea bag onto the sheet music paper to add a "vintage" appeal. Let the sheet music paper dry completely.
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of a paper circle with a sponge brush. Adhere the sheet music circle to the center of the wooden coaster. Make sure there is no bubbling and/or wrinkling of the sheet music by smoothing it with your fingers. Dry overnight.
Spray each coaster using Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. Let the coasters dry completely before enjoying.
