Encourage each family member to keep an eye for coupons on products they want and use. As your daughter finds a coupon for her shampoo or your son finds one in a magazine for his favorite protein bars, they can place them in the coupon holder. When its time for a grocery run, grab the small coupon pocket off the fridge and take it with you.
First, recycle a pair of jeans or colorful pants with back pockets still intact. Use fabric craft scissors to cut around the pocket leaving the back layer of fabric secured to the back. For a more colorful coupon craft pocket, use scrap fabric from any source. Draw a pocket shape on paper, cut it out, and use the model to trace the pocket onto two pieces of your fabric. Sew the side and bottom edges together leaving the top of the pocket open.
Cut one-inch sections of magnetic tape. Remove the paper backing to expose the sticky side of the magnets and press them against the back of the pocket. For an even greener approach, reuse existing magnets you no longer want. Simply glue the existing magnets, like advertisements for pizza or realty companies, onto the back of the coupon pocket. If you are using a denim pocket, you may need to use heavier magnets to support the weight of the fabric. If your denim craft pocket falls or slides down the refrigerator surface, simply remove the magnets and replace them with thicket, stronger magnets.
Flip the coupon pocket over face up on the work surface. Decorate the front with craft items like buttons, pins, patches or fabric paint.
Use the magnets on the back to press the coupon pocket on the fridge. It's helpful to keep a grocery list posted next to the coupon pocket to jot down items as you save coupons for them. You can also attach a small length of ribbon to the top of the coupon craft pocket and hang from a kitchen cabinet or coffee mug hook.
Make larger pocket crafts by cutting out old cargo pockets or tracing a larger pocket shape onto fabric. Use these to keep the electric, cable and utility bills in one place on the refrigerator until time to pay them.
Make recycled coupon craft pockets as gifts for teachers to use in their classrooms (they can attach them to metal filing cabinets for loose notes), or for your friends. Use can also use special Christmas fabric to make seasonal coupon craft pockets during the holidays. Tuck extra crafts into Christmas gifts and attach to presents for a little something extra.
