Recycled Necktie Crafts for Father's Day: Make a Necktie Wall Hanging Photo Holder

Are you looking for a unique handmade gift for dad? Consider recycling a necktie into a wall hanging photo holder. You've seen wall hanging photo holders made up with frames attached to wide ribbon. They are super-stylish and very practical too because you can display a number of small photos in one narrow spot on the wall. This is a fun way to show off small photos without cluttering up desks, tables and bookcases. Admittedly, these wall hanging photo holders usually look pretty feminine. You can create a similar look that's just right for dad by upcycling an old necktie.

Materials:

1 old necktie

up to 5 small, lightweight photo frames

peel and stick Velcro tabs like those from 3M

hot glue gun

Choosing the frames:

Choose the old necktie first so that the frames can have complimentary colors and style. Because you will be hot gluing and also hanging from a Velco tab, the small frames should be lightweight. Two inch by 3 inch frames for wallet size pictures are perfect. The ones we used in our necktie photo frame holder were only $1.00 at Dollar General but look like brushed pewter.

Just like with flower arrangements, an odd number will look best so choose three to five frames. While rectangular frames are most common, you could also use round, heart shaped or square frames or a combination of varied shapes.

Directions:

Tie a knot in the tie just as you generally would but without the neck the end of the tie will hang down too long and will need to be cut or tacked up. Make the knot as flat as possible in the back so that the tie will hang straight.

Want to make this necktie craft even easier?

Check Good Will stores or your local charity resale stores to find a clip on tie that's also ready to go and start the directions for here.

Carefully remove the standing legs on the backs of the photo frames if there are any. Position them in order on the tie. If there is a pattern on the tie use it to help you line up the photo frames. If not use a measuring tape to sure. Also use the measuring tape to mark the spot when you pick up the photo frames to add the glue. Use small glue dots of hot glue around the edges of the photo frame and replace on the tie.

Once you've found the perfect spot to hang the necktie photo holder, add a peel and stick Velcro tab to the back and apply the to the wall.

This unique Father's Day gift is a fun way to help dad show off his pride and joy at home or in his office and he'll love that this tie is "knot" one he has to wear.
