Recycled Oatmeal Container Piggy Bank Craft

This homemade Piggy Bank craft is a simple craft that your kids can do with you. Old oatmeal containers (the 42 ounce cylinder cardboard containers) make perfect piggy banks, are easy to obtain, and most importantly, are free. Here is how to make the recycled oatmeal container piggy bank.

For the recycled oatmeal container piggy bank craft, you will need the following crafting materials:

An empty oatmeal container
Elmer's glue or any other glue
Pair of scissors
Some material to cover the container, including but not limited to:
Wallpaper
Contact paper
Construction paper
Plain paper with kids' artwork on it
Felt or cloth scraps

Recycled Oatmeal Container Piggy Bank Craft Step #1: Craft preparations:

Remove the label from the oatmeal container. If you remove the label in one piece, you can recycle it as a sheet of scrap paper for the kids to scribble on, or make into a paper airplane. Look for the seam, and then cut alongside the seam.

Recycled Oatmeal Container Piggy Bank Craft Step #2: Decorate the outside of the piggy bank:

Add a covering to the recycled piggy bank. Wallpaper and contact paper adhere to the oatmeal container, while other paper, felt and cloth will need to be glued to the recycled oatmeal container. You can also cut strips of construction paper, weave the strips together, and glue the whole mat to the oatmeal container. Or cut construction paper into tiny pieces and then glue the paper to the oatmeal container in a mosaic. Or the kids can draw their artwork on a sheet of plain paper or construction paper, then have the artwork wrapped around and glued to the oatmeal container. Or the kids can simply paint on the cardboard itself or color the cardboard with their magic markers.

Recycled Oatmeal Container Piggy Bank Craft Step #3: Making the piggy bank:

With the scissors, carefully make a slot in the plastic lid of the recycled oatmeal container. You can also glue paper or decorations to the lid if desired. Felt or cloth can also be glued to the lid of the piggy bank.

Allow the recycled oatmeal container piggy bank to dry overnight, if glued. You now have a piggy bank that will hold a moderate amount of coins. A circular disk of wood or corrugated cardboard can be glued to the bottom of the piggy bank for added strength. Now all you need is some money to put in your piggy bank.

This is a great idea in many ways. Bet kids would enjoy putting their change in a bank they made themselves.
