Recycling Business Opens in New Haven, Indiana

Quincy Recycling observed the opening of their New Haven, Indiana plant at 2210 Summit Street with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony. This is the fourth plant owned by Quincy Recycling. They are headquartered in Quincy, Illinois and specialize in business-to-business recycling and waste reduction solutions.

In order to welcome Quincy Recycling to the Northeast Indiana region and find out more about their operations, contact was made and I was able to find our more about the ways in which Quincy Recycling is helping American business go green.

ABS) When did your plant open in New Haven, Indiana, and why did you choose this area?

CS) We chose the Fort Wayne / Allen County Market to be closer to new and existing suppliers. We needed a facility with rail access so that we can ship our material throughout North America and Mexico. This facility had 200,000 square feet, lots of loading docks and rail access.

We have found the business climate in Northeast Indiana and the opportunities to service involuntary suppliers are substantial.

ABS) I noticed on your site that, "We always start our new business relationships with this question '" "What are your recycling, waste reduction and sustainability goals?".

What kinds of answers have you received from that question? I would imagine that the answers are as varied as the companies you work with?

CS) We try not to guess what's important to our supply base '" the outcome is always much better when we know what their goals are. They are usually focused on one of two areas and typical answers would include;

a.
We want to get to zero landfill and we want to recycle everything possible. Meeting our sustainability goals is our number one priority.

b.
The bottom line is our number one priority. We only want to recycle items that can save us money or provide revenue.

These two examples are at opposite ends of the spectrum and we often end up creating a blended program that reduces waste as much as possible, while also adding positively to the bottom line.

Regardless, when our suppliers share their goals with us '" we work very hard to create a program that will meet those goals.

ABS) Since it seems apparent that you customize each program for the business that you work with, in what ways can your program help the bottom line of each company?

CS) The three primary ways that we can add value via the bottom line for our suppliers:

Waste reduction. Remove items from the waste stream that our suppliers are paying to have hauled away.

b.
Fair pricing. Pay our suppliers a fair commodity price for the materials they're removing from their waste stream.

c.
Process. Utilize our experience in setting up recovery programs to make the process as efficient as possible. We want to reduce operational cost and increase revenue for our suppliers.

Collection '" We evaluate how the material is being collected throughout the plant or facility and offer suggestions to improve the process.

Baling '" We offer a full line of manual and automated baling equipment. We work directly with the manufacturers and have great factory support. We provide equipment at no charge to qualified suppliers.

Transportation '" We utilize 53 foot trailers, compactors, and roll off truck transportation.

ABS) Do you find that more and more companies are becoming aware of the necessity to use sustainable business practices?

CS) Yes '" there is no question that businesses are focusing on sustainable business practices. Our challenge is to find the balance between sustainability and bottom line results for our suppliers.

ABS) How many employees work at the New Haven, Indiana plant, and do you have your own green team?

CS) We have 14 associates at our New Haven plant and they're all on our green team.
