The first thing that you should do is you can recycle aluminum cans. After plastic is recycled several times it is to weak and has to go to a landfill but aluminum can be recycled over and over again and still has the same strength. Plus, when recycling aluminum you will get a bit of pocket change.
Although aluminum is the best, easiest and pays the most you should also recycle paper and cardboard, plastic and bags, glass and other recyclables. A new problem is computer parts and now you can recycle them to. You will have to find a place that specializes in this area but it is a must when you have old, outdated or just broken computer equipment. What the facility will do is extract all the gold, silver and coper that is used in the wiring and on the contacts. They will also reuse integrated circuit chips that are in good working order.
Old furniture should never be thrown away because chances are it can be repaired, refinished, reapolstered and given a new life. If your not up to the task than you can have a carpenter, or other do the job. If your not up to the fee than you should sell or give it away to a person that could do it there self and than keep it for there own use or re-sell it.
One thing that shouldn't be used to fill up land fills is table waste. All plant material that is consumed or wasted such as fruits, vegetables and grains can be pout in a bin to decompose. Along with this you can also put lawn clippings, sticks or twigs or even paper. One thing you cant put is animal matter because it can spread harmful bacteria. If you are a vegan like me you wont have to worry about it though. Make sure to keep it wet and to stir it once or twice a week to keep it well aerated. Once everything is completely decomposed than you can use it to put on your garden to make it more fertile.
If you have never heard of the three r's than they are Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This just proves that recycling isn't the only thing you can do. For example instead of using the plastic bags that stores provide, you can bring your own tote bags to carry everything in. Another very important thing you can do is use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Even though they are mare expensive they last so much longer and will end up saving you money and electricity.
It is also important to save energy. You can this buy not only using energy efficient appliances but use them only when necessary. For example you can wait for a full load of laundry before washing them.
In conclusion there are many things that can be done to help the environment and you don't have to do them all but it is important that you do something!

Hi,
Recycling is required in NYC. It used to be great if a passerby would use your trash can to throw something away rather than toss it into the street. The worst thing now is when a person comes down the street and puts the wrong thing in the wrong recycling can and the homeowner gets a $400. ticket!
