Red Cross Provides New Guide for Family Caregiving
New Guide, DVD Helps Those Helping Stricken Family Members
Family Caregiving is a guide and DVD published by the Red Cross. It is designed to enhance the skills and confidence of those who will be giving primary care to family members with new special needs. Members will learn how to help those who have limited mobility or need medical and physical support.
"You can only meet their needs - and your own - if you are properly prepared" said Red Cross R.N. Jean Erdtmann. "Family Caregiving gives you the tools and knowledge to make the role of caregiver much easier."
Some highlights of the guide include how to prevent injuries, making the home more safe and administering special medications. Family Caregiving also gives advice on managing the extra finances associated with home medical care and legal issues.
The DVD portion of the guide will provide family members with demonstrated instructions on how to handle medical emergencies associated with those they will care for. The nearly two-hour DVD shows emergency procedures for stroke, choking, and heart attack victims.
"This book helps families navigate the complex world of long-term caregiving, and offers a wide array of useful, straightforward information," says Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the Family Caregiver Alliance in San Francisco, CA in a press release. "Families and caregivers will be encouraged by the prevailing message: 'You can do this.' "
The guide will also address the needs of those who are providing care. Stress management tips, resources, and challenging issues are all covered in a special chapter in the guide. Family Caregiving can be found in the Red Cross online store for $24.95. You can also purchase the guide at Red Cross chapters all over the United States.
