Red Flower Choices to Add Pizzazz to Your Garden

I simply love red. It is my favorite color and like a hummingbird, red draws my attention. Show me a grouping of flowers and I'll go straight for the red ones. If you like to add some festive red-hot coloring to your flower beds or containers, check out a few of my favorite red flowers.

Nicotiana
Also known as Tobacco Plant, Nicotiana comes in a variety of colors but red is, by far, my favorite.

Bee Balm
Bee Balm is a bright red addition to the garden but it spreads to the point that some people actually start yanking it out. The color is beautiful and the fragrance is unforgettable. You will have plenty of winged visitors (bees, butterflies, hummingbirds) when you include Bee Balm.

Columbine
If you have never seen a red Columbine flower then you have missed a treat. The red Columbine in my flower garden is definitely one of my personal favorites.

Cypress Vine
Cypress Vine is a tiny, star-shaped red flower that easily attracts hummingbirds. This perennial vine has unusual feathery leaves and will come back every year and will easily spread after it is established. Plant this flower on a fence or trellis and allow it room to climb.

Clematis
While I don't personally have any red Clematis in my flower garden right now (mine are all mauve), they are gorgeous when they are in full bloom. Clematis also needs a fence or trellis for support as it is a climber.

Cardinal Flower
Cardinal Flowers are another hummingbird favorite and like Columbine, feature a drooping bell-shaped flower. Judging by the name, it is not difficult to figure out the color of these blooms even if you haven't seen them.

Morning Glory
Morning Glories are one of my favorite flowers. These day-blooming flowers that climb come in a number of different colors. While my personal favorite Morning Glory color is the blue variety, the red are simply gorgeous.

Other Red Flower Choices
For other options in red flowers there are plenty to choose from. More of my favorites would include Red Hot Poker, Impatiens, Phlox, Mandevilla, Hibiscus, Four o'clocks, Roses, Geranium.

Your best bet for finding the perfect red flowers for your garden or flower bed would be to peruse your local nursery or garden center to see what is available in your area. A mix of annuals and perennials as well as choosing early-season bloomers and late-season bloomers will keep your garden in the red all summer long and for years to come.
