The first windmill is expected to be placed on top of a 90-foot unused water tower on Van Dyke Street. The city has financed the program for testing this turbine in the coming months. If the tests are successful, New York plans to begin using the energy harnessed by the windmill to eventually power electric cars and street lights along the waterfront.
Many experts believe that Red Hook is the ideal location for such testing as it is essentially a peninsula right here in New York City. Just like Holland which is known for its powerful windmills. The absence of tall buildings and close proximity to the water also helps.
The turbine is expected to produce about 4,500 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough to power a single home. Testing will cost $12,500 and will determine if small windmills are even worth it in a city as large as New York.
If windmills can work so well in Holland, why wouldn't they work in New York? After all, we were once known as New Amsterdam.
