Red: The Hottest Fashion Trend for the 80th Academy Awards

MiMi Abney
Watching celebrities stroll down the red carpet in designer wear before the Oscar telecast is a guilty pleasure for worldwide fashion junkies. For this year's 80th Academy Awards, there was one color that was the night's overwhelming red carpet 2008 fashion winner: Red.

The Lady in Red: Ruby Dee in Kevan Hall

Ruby Dee shined in a brilliant red hued gown reminiscent of her regal yet legendary status and her colorful first name. According to designer Kevan Hall's interview in the San Antonio Express News, Ms. Dee specifically asked for the couture gown to not only 'stretch her five foot frame', but to use the color ruby as the theme for the shade of the design. Ms. Dee was perfection in Mr. Hall's creation. Although she did not win the much deserved best supporting actress statue, she was an undeniable fashion red carpet champion.

A Vision of Love in Red: Anne Hathaway in Marchesa

Marchesa's dynamic design duo Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig never disappoint their red carpet fans with fantastic visions of goddess grandeur in their couture creations. Last night's scarlet vision of love, worn straight of the runway, by Anne Hathaway was no exception. Anne sashayed down the carpet in a breathtaking one shoulder dark red draped Marchesa gown with a gathered hem, from their Fall 2008 collection. The beautiful contrast of the deep red rose colored gown against Ms. Hathaway's' pale porcelain skin was captivating and spectacular.

No Grey Anatomy on Oscar's Red Carpet: Katherine Heigl excels in Red Escada

I've always been a fan of Escada's Wolfgang and Margaretha Ley and their love of color, exquisite fabrics, majesty and opulence. Katherine Heigl took a page from the old Hollywood glamour handbook and channeled her inner Marilyn Monroe in Escada's red silk georgette one-shoulder sensation. For one evening Ms. Heigl shined in the color of the night and traded in her Grey's doctor scrubs for a brilliant shade of crimson red.

A Red Carpet Rebound from the Grammy's: Miley Cyrus is young, fresh and beautiful in Valentino

The fashion police fined Miley Cyrus' glam squad for their overdose of hair extensions, old lady makeup and a overall fashion faux-pas in her Grammy dress. Miley is a teenage entertainment tour-de-force and I knew she would recover - and she did. Valentino the master of the red dress made the world forget about the Grammy dress debacle and focus on her red carpet Oscar rebound. Miley looked spectacular. She was age appropriate, lovely and simply elegant.

Red Satin Stunner for a Heartfelt Cause: Heidi Klum in John Galliano for Dior Haute Couture

Supermodel Heidi Klum wore a heart-stopping red Galliano for Dior Haute Couture gown. Want to wear the gown to next year's valentine's ball? You're in luck. This red carpet stunner is being auctioned at MyCokeRewards.com until March 10th for the Heart Truth campaign. Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign about women and heart disease is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Who knew that great red carpet fashion is not only great to watch but has the ability to not only empower women, but fight heart disease as well?

The little black evening gown is always the fashion dress du jour on Oscar's red carpet. From Heidi Klum, Katherine Heigl and Anne Hathaway to Miley Cyrus and Ruby Dee beautiful young starlets and awe-inspiring old guard Hollywood grand dames both ruled the 2008 red carpet in red designer fashion fit to perfection.
