We found ourselves driving through Red Oak one Monday evening and happened to come across Amaya's, which is conveniently located at 523 Highway 342, not too far from Interstate 35. Since we were hungry we decided to taste test the restaurant.
Amaya's atmosphere is similar to that found in many Mexican restaurants. The restaurant was decorated with brightly colored lights and the walls were painted a bright orange. There was even a sombrero mounted on the wall behind our table.
The Red Oak restaurant offers a full range of Mexican and Tex-Mex appetizers and specialties--from Nachos to Fajitas to Huevos Rancheros to Tacos Al Carbon, and more. Amaya's also offers Shrimp and Fish Specialties, Steak Specialties, and Sandwiches. There are even soups and salads for the dieters in your party.
As in most Mexican restaurants, the meal began with a tasty basket of chips and a container of Amaya's salsa (which is slightly hotter than most salsas I have tasted).
We chose to order a ½ -order of Beef Fajita Nachos (ordered as an entrée) and one of Amaya's Very Special Dishes, a Texas Size Chimichanga filled with beef fajita meat. (If you've never had a chimichanga, it is a deep fried burrito that is filled with your choice of ingredients and served with ranchera sauce.)
Our food was served promptly. I found the ½-order of Beef Fajita Nachos to be more than enough food for one person and was grateful that I had not ordered the larger size. They were cheesier than most nachos I've had and were served without jalapenos and pico de gallo. (Pico de gallo is a Mexican relish. It is usually made of chopped onions, tomatos, peppers, and seasoned with lime juice and cilantro. The exact ingredients of pico de gallo vary from cook to cook.)
The Texas Size Chimichanga was huge-big enough to feed both of my teenage daughters. It was served with a side order of rice and a side order of refried beans. Not only was the Texas Size Chimichanga big, it was good. We're a chimichanga family; whenever we try a new Mexican place at least one of us orders a chimichanga off the menu. So, we know our chimichangas and we can recognize a good one. This Red Oak restaurant knows what they are doing when it comes to this particular dish.
We fed dinner, including sodas and tea, to our family of four for less than forty dollars.
Amaya's Mexican Grill and Azteca Club is located at 523 Highway 342 in Red Oak, Texas. I could not find a website for Amaya's.
