Red Princess Blues and Taming Wolves: A Short Film Review

The Red Princess Blues is a short film from The Enigma Factory, which is approximately ten minutes long. The short is meant as a promotional piece for a larger production and starring are Richard Tyson (The Fear Chamber), Tabithat Morella ("Two and a Half Men"), Rachel Grant (The Tournament) and narrator Robert Forster. Visually stunning, mature, and creating excitement through action sequences, the Red Princess Blues is like watching a darkly written fairy tale. To move towards a feature length film soon, this is a film to watch simply for the visual appeal.

The film begins along the lines of a "Little Red Riding Hood" story, where a young girl encounters a much larger and more worldly wolf in the form of a travelling carnie. Corrupted with shots of Bourbon and tales of sexual expectations, Little Red Riding Hood aka Zoe (Morella) gets bitten quickly. However, a lone woman intervenes (the Princess) and soon Rimo (Tyson), the local boozing carnie, is hurtling through the air, as deserved.

Red Princess Blues really follows along with a fairytale vibe and the heightened visuals give the piece a surreal, imaginative quality, which anchors it in this storytelling genre. Other reviews have commented on the visual style of the movie: "this film was breathtaking with its visual explosions of action" (Toothless). Yet this is not a child's movie, but one for adults. Many of the sexual situations are meant for an older viewership and the big bad wolf's defeat will be enjoyed more by an adult crowd.

Richard Tyson is suitable in his role of a predatory carnie and each of the characters are given enough time within the reels to develop some of their character. Morella is able to show youthful innocence and guilibility, while Grant, the protagonist, shows that some women are built tough as nails.

Available for download on the Ipad, Ipod, or at Itunes for .99, this is a film you want to see. The Red Princess Blues is evocative, thrilling, and the film offers a clear cut solution for one wolf whose appetite gets him into trouble, possibly for the last time. Overall: 7.5 out of 10 (-1.5 for shortness, -1 for such a clear cut ending - positives already talked about).
