Red raspberry leaf appears to be safe during all stages of pre-conception, pregnancy, postpartum and lactation, so it may ultimately be worth a try if you want a holistic herb that can improve your reproductive health.
Here are some of the most common benefits during pregnancy, traditionally attributed to red raspberry leaf.
1. Prenatal nutrition. Red raspberry leaf contains phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. These nutrients are all essential for proper fluid balance during pregnancy, as well as the development of the baby's bones and the preservation of your own bone density.
2. A stronger uterus. The leaves of the red raspberry plant contain the alkaloid medicinal compound fragrine, which can trigger Braxton-Hicks or "practice" contractions, leading to a stronger womb. Traditionally, midwives have believed that this can shorten labor and decrease labor-related pain.
3. Reduced nausea. Many women drink red raspberry tea during the first trimester to ease symptoms of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting, or morning sickness. It is an effective source of B-vitamins, which are theoretical treatments for this common discomfort.
4. On-time labor. Historically, midwives have believed that red raspberry leaf can prevent preterm and post-term labor. A few poorly designed studies have supported this use, but more evidence is needed to fully confirm its efficacy in this regard.
5. A better delivery. Red raspberry leaf, when taken during pregnancy, may aid in the delivery of both the baby and the placenta. Labor assisted by red raspberry leaf may be shorter, and it's less likely to require C-section, forceps delivery or vacuum extraction.
6. Preventing hemorrhage. As a result of the fragrine and clot-affecting compounds in red raspberry leaf, women may be less like to experience postpartum hemorrhage (excessive bleeding) after using the herb during pregnancy.
7. More vaginal flexibility. Many midwives believe that red raspberry leaf during pregnancy can improve the elasticity of the vagina. This can help to prevent perenial and vaginal tears, and may help to reduce postpartum pain.
8. Better breast milk. If you keep taking red raspberry leaf after pregnancy, you may have better luck with breastfeeding. Fragrine and nutrients in red raspberry leaf can enrich the nutritional content of your milk while also increasing its quantity.
As always, talk to your obstetrician or midwife if you are interested in using medicinal herbs during pregnancy.
