Red Sky at Morning Review

Everyday people face decisions. According to Leon Buckhalter "characters are defined by the decisions they make." In other words people are characterized by the choices that they make. This statement can be proven true through the novel Red Sky at Morning. In Red Sky at Morning, Richard Bradford develops the idea that making decisions define a person through the conflict of Ann Arnold and the dynamic characterization of Josh Arnold.

Ann Arnold faces a very big conflict living without a husband. She faces a big move, leaving everything behind and moving to a place that she does not like. This place happens to me Sagrado New Mexico where the people don't speak her language. She has no friends in Sagrado. To cope with her problems she begins to drink alcohol. This causes her to get into a conflict with josh.

For example, Ann Arnold was smacking josh because she was drunk also she took it upon herself to fire Amadeo and Excildia which made matters worse around the house. Amadeo and Excildia were the maids of the house and really kept thing running in the Arnold house. The choices that Ann Arnold makes can help define her as a person.

Richard Bradford dynamically characterizes josh through the novel. At first josh is a young adult and follows what his father does. He makes small choices and does not get into trouble. As Josh moves to Sagrado and becomes older/more mature he starts to change. Josh does not have his father any more he has to make the decisions around the house himself. Josh becomes a little more of a trouble maker when he moves to Sagrado.

This is partly because he does not have a father figure around to tell him what to do and what not to do. He gets into trouble with some of the locals. Lastly, he starts to make the big decisions once his father dies at war. This made matter worse for both Ann Arnold and Josh. He chooses not to have a guardian when Jimbob offers it to him. The decisions made by josh make up his character and who he really is.

The Quote "characters are defined by the decisions they make" by Leon Buckhalter is applied in the novel Red Sky at Morning. Both Ann and Josh Arnold have made decisions that can describe who they really are. In time people make decisions that may not be good or bad but it describes who they are as a person.
